Getting Ready to Buy/Build First Rig

Thanks to all who gave me feedback earlier, I'm getting ready to buy all the parts and put it together. Here's the final list, coming in at just over $2k.

I had a couple questions before I blow 2 g's, if anyone can field them:

1) The main reason I want this is to run a game a bit smoother. I slapped a graphics card in an ancient PC of mine a few years back to get Doom III to run and it has been doing an adequate job until I tried to run some recent demos/games on it. I wanted to build a PC both for the fun of it and to run Empires: Total War smoothly on all the highest settings. That being said, I think I may be overestimating all the hardware I need to do this. Am I trying to kill a fly with a cannon, and if so, how much should I spend/what should I buy to get a PC with enough muscle to run the Empires game and keep up with the times for the next few years?

2) I had a few comments to get the ASUS motherboard over the EVGA one, and since they both are the same price and the EVGA has higher reviews on average, think I will stick with the EVGA. Anyone have any reasons to not get it, other than personal brand-preference?

3) I'm not really wedded to the video card, I just picked the 4850x2 over the 4870. Any thoughts on the better card?

Thanks again, I appreciate the input!

Looks good. The 4850x2 is a 220w GPU so you don't need a 1000w psu. The Corsair 750tx should be fine with headroom.

Agreed, looks good considering you're on machine that runs doom 3 "good enough. I doubt you will be disappointed

i might get an nvidia gpu with the evga mobo, or get a gigabyte ud5 or extreme with that 4850x2
I would take down prices somewhere and soop up the GPU. 260GTX is good but at that res you can use something slighty better especially when everything else is top of the line.

Main things I see that can switched off is the Mobo, Heatsink, Ram and probably the PSU.

I know there are good 1366 mobos at around the $200 area and not the $300. The v8 could be changed to a vendetta2 or dark knight, there are some good OCZ an G.skill rams that are much cheaper than the always overpriced corsairs. And also coolermaster have a 750W psu for only $50 something refurbished and I can vouch they are as good as new. Or 850W for 80 I think.

Use all that money saved and upgrade that GPU! Or get 2 in sli. Sad to see such a expensive system with only a medium grade video card.
