[GI] Consumers to be hit by Wii price rise

Don McCabe, managing director of UK retailer Chips, has spoken out in surprise at Nintendo's price increase of the Wii, suggesting that the videogames giant could have sold the console at the GBP 199.99 price point "from the very beginning".

Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, McCabe explained how the move by Nintendo was not entirely unexpected, but would impact sales negatively as the price would have to be passed on to the consumer.

"It's a first," he said. "I can't remember any other console that has been launched, been on the market for a couple of years and then gone up in price. It's an absolute first."

"I half expected it," he continued, adding: "I can see their reasons why and there are reasons which are perfectly valid in today's market place - the Pound has been dropping against the Euro for a while now and it shows no sign of bouncing back."

He explained that Nintendo could have probably sold the console at the higher price point since its launch without impacting sales, but that the public perception of the price hike will be negative.

"Hindsight is a wonderful thing, but I think Nintendo could have sold all the machines that they have done at the GBP 199 price point, because we've effectively had shortages from day one, pretty much all the way through."

He added: "There's never ever been quite enough stock in the market place, each Christmas we come to there's always stock shortages."

"It will have a negative effect on the sales... I think we'll still end up with shortages come Christmas again, but through the summer it's going to have an effect."

When asked if there were concerns of more price hikes across different products, McCabe commented: "It wouldn't be unrealistic to expect similar price rises across the whole Nintendo range."

The increase price will almost certainly have to passed on to the consumer, McCabe reasoned, despite any current reports to the contrary.

"I don't think any retailer has got the ability to soak up that sort of margin change," he explained. "I think I saw one story that said the supermarkets wouldn't be passing the price point on but I think they will. I don't think any retailer can take that sort of squeeze."

wii fails anyways, maybe this price raise will give people a reason not to buy it.
Wow, would've never expected a price "increase".
The pound's a joke nowadays, even with other economies getting hit hard.

The Steam $=£ pricing strategy actually isn't too far from the truth anymore (instead of previously being a massive ripoff).

I read that a lot of imported electronics were looking at price rises, particularly Sony products, but i've not actually witnessed any change.

Could be a good time to sell my Wii on ebay..

How so? Can you provide some factual and valid points to backup your statement? Nintendo Wii is the most innovative video game console since their invention of the analog stick. Wii is used in hospitals, gyms, and a variety of other institutions.

You easily call out fail maybe because you couldn't buy one, LoL.

Do you have to be rude every chance you get?

I think the Wii fails as well. It has a really great idea but I don't feel they are really taking advantage of it like they could be. I'm sure most people here would agree that the Wii really needs to get out some better games that take advantage of it's design. So far the best game released for it comes with the system.

Wii Fit wasn't even really turned into a game. Somewhere along the line they forgot it was suppose to be fun and not feel like a workout dvd.

To raise the price on it this late in the game is really going to hurt it sells. Had the Wii have been 300 it would have sold less. Something about the price of 250 makes it a little easier to shallow. Had it have been 300 I wouldn't have brought one for my nieces.

Actually, Optical is right. That 'fail' post is in itself a fail. The Wii is the most successful gaming console in history, and its fail? Thats like saying electricity is fail.

I own a Wii, and a 360, and despite not using the Wii very often, its definitly an interesting console with lots of perks. Whether or not it could be better is a stupid quesiton.. anything in this world could be better, I dont care what anyone tries to say.

Just because someone dislikes the Wii for whatever reason, does not justify it as 'fail'. It is almost half the price of PS3, and sales of Wii pwn both microsoft and sony combined. So yeah.. its fail.

As far as really going to hurt sales? I doubt it. Its not like its a $50 increase, nor is it even in Continental America yet.

With regards to Wii Fit. Thats exactly what its designed to be.. A workout, hence the name.. whats the problem here?

Dang recession making everything go up...
I just feel like it has so much potential to be a lot more than it current is. I honest don't think that Nintendo is really even trying right now. I don't have any proof behind any of this.

You'll never hear me say that the Wii is not fun. I just don't understand why it doesn't have more games for it that really take advantage of it.
All people calling fail to the wii, would you rather be receiving the revenue generated from the wii or one of the other current generation consoles?

Second that!

If you don't like it, that's fine. But don't go bashing it because many do like it, and the sales statistics shows it.

Many of those people buy it, play it twice and then it sits there until a actual game comes out. Not the junkware it has like those carnival games..

that's right, i couldn't buy one because my money has to spent elsewhere on more important things. Sure its innovative but its not doing what its meant to do, kick a$$ and so far every game it has is a joke and to be honest its only cool because its motion sensor. nothing amazing really..

i just feel the only reason people are buying it is because of the whole motion sensor idea, which i say is cool but it honestly could be doing so much better meaning you get what you pay for.
it might take a another year in my opinion until it truly meets its full potential.

Exactly. Basically a (used to be), $250 gimmick. At least with the 360 or even PS3, you get way more for your money. Especially the 360 seeing how it's $200 already to the Wii's previous price of $250. It may be innovative and all that crap, but what good is innovation with crappy games to be innovated with?

my point exactly. I think the Design is great but they really need to use its full potential then it would be a great system.

Or it's his opinion and he doesn't need to explain himself to you. LoL.

This is true for like 75% of the people I know. Buying a Wii makes you a part on the in crowd. Sure, I would love to be on the receiving end of the profit. I'm certain every gaming system wished they had thought of it first.

It still doesn't change that fact that I think they should do more with it. I am not bashing the Wii as a system. I'm bashing the game designers. Look at their ideas for dead rising. Or look at the fact that often commercials show the 360 version of the game during wii commercials. I just wish more good developers would back nintendo and actually push out some good games for their system that takes full advantage of the wii motion.

My mom ran out a brought kung fu panda for her wii. She loved the game on my PS3 so much that she just had to have it. I don't really understand why they had to take so many things out of that game when porting it for the Wii. They even removed the custom that gave Po the special moves.

You should be bashing the Wii as a system, as it is not powerful enough to even capture the real deadrising experience. You just get 5 zombies and a game mode to have a picnic with them instead of chopping them.

Two corrections:

The PS2 is the most successful console in history. It's sold somewhere around 125M worldwide.

And the PS3 and 360 have around 2 million more combined sales on the Wii.
