Mythic's MMO Warhammer Online is closing 63 low-population servers: 43 in the North American and Oceanic regions run by Mythic itself, and 20 of the European servers operated by GOA.

Mythic has been offering free transfers off these servers for some months now in a campaign of consolidation, after the game's subscribers fell from a high of 750,000 immediately after launch to 300,000 early this year.

The final round of character transfers, which took place yesterday in the US and is currently underway in Europe, is automatic and compulsory. The "source" servers will be closed after completion.

Lists of the servers being closed, and the destinations for characters on those servers are available on the US and European WAR websites.

Healthy server populations are critical to any MMO, but especially one with the large-scale player-versus-player warfare dynamic of Warhammer Online.

I never liked that most MMOs have multiple "realms". It should just be one big world where everyone who has the game can play together instead of a multiplayer RPG with large player limits per server.
the only thing that will kill wow is blizzards next mmo or if blizzard is dumb enough to kill it.
Still 300k people is not bad at all and not surprising servers are being shut down as that's a lot of servers in the first place.

It's a shame the game wasn't more succesful. It plays very well but really the ONLY way to displace WoW is to release an MMO with as much content as WoW has at this current moment. That will probably never happen because its simply not cost effective.
That is a lot of users that dropped. Well they seemed like they had plenty of servers to support the huge turnout.

Yeah, eve has one server lol. As of an hour ago there were 35k people playing, and thats at night time here....2k of those were trials.
P.S. anyone want an eve trial? I can send out 21 day trials for anyone who wants one!
Not big news IMO....they had a ridiculous amount of servers to begin with.

Since the last patch the game has been a frenzy of PvP, new classes, and all around fun. So for many this is still a WoW killer.

It has only been out for five and a half months, and it seems it is in much better shape than many other MMOs competing at this stage. (AoC anyone?)
I really enjoy playing WAR. The server I play on has always had a decent population on it so there's always been something to do. I've yet been able to figure out why I never got in to WoW. I played then left and came back a couple of times but each time something was missing. The last MMO I played that I enjoyed more than WAR was EQ2.

Yeah, but if it doesn't have a million people playing it, it's flopping

They've done more to the game in about 6 months than Funcom did with AoC in almost a year.
