Gigabyte ga-ex58-ud4p

Hello I recently picked up a Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD4P, an Intel i7, and 6 gigs of Corsair Dominator ram. The ram is rated at 1600 at 1.65v but defaults to 1033 at 1.50v. I'm wondering can I clock the ram to 1600 w/o overclocking the cpu? If so how do I do that? Thanks.

Sure you can. I'm not exactly sure about the settings in your X58's bios and how to overclock an i7 since I have a C2D, but I'm pretty sure there should be an option in there that should unlink your CPU from your RAM...in my case, it unlinks their FSB (i7 doesn't have a Front Side Bus). Once you've done that, then just crank your ram up to default speed and set it to 1.65 in voltage settings.
I checked my settings and I'm not sure if there is a way to unlink the cpu and ram. However, both have there own mulitpliers and frequency options. So I'm guessing the one doesn't affect the other.

Another thing is the frequency step up at 2 degree increments; 1.50v, 1.52v, 1.54v, etc. Just thought that was strange...

Thx.
