ok peps as the heading says i have 2x9800GX2 in Quad sli and for the most part am not unhappy with them but i have noticed of late (ie my 2 latest games warhead and farcry 2).
That i get the felling the video ram is holding me back being only 512 and not 1gb as i first thought
I game @ 1080p on a 42in screen so with every setting on max in both the above games i have started too get some fps probs and some stutter
and this is all with no aa). So my real question is will two 280's in sli . no1 cure this problem and no2.match the performance i have with my GX2's.

If you have time I suggest you wait for 212 which should be here by Q1 2009. But if your struggling so much you might wanna buy them yes. But my opinion still stays at 212.
Well i would say wait... About farcry 2 i have some FPS probs too, do you have the same probs as me?

When i play to start with i have completely smooth gameplay, but as i play it becomes more unplayable and fps's get unstable. Suddently i get like 10 fps and then it can run smooth for some time again.

is the 212 going too have more power than the 280 i thought it was just a 40nm re-hash

Smaller technology=lower temps=more oc=more fun=bigger price=lower price for older components=costumer's happy

Yeah, something like that. But imho it can be worth it actually to wait for it. Or wait until Q4 for GTX 3xx. But as I said, If your struggling very much with them you might wanna upgrade to a pair of GTX 280 and they will perform as good as the GX2 and even a bit better.

I know! I'll be sticking with my 880gt I can't afford to upgrade. Of course I only game at 1680x1050, I can't afford a big ol' HDTV either

ppl with Xfire have it as well.... It seems more common with AA on... I have had alot better results with 180.43 drivers... A nice jump in FPS and havent seen any of those drops...

As for 280GTX SLI vs 9800GX2 SLI... From all I have read the GX2 in SLI does not scale well at all... If you have the money now Id say grab the 280's now...

Waiting is no fun... when they release the 212 they will announce the next series and you can wait for them than wait for a rev then.....

2x280GTX in SLI is great right now... all they are doing is trying to 1 up ATI with the 212, they got beat this time and should eat crow and put more effort in the 3XX series

I'd say you should grab the 280's now as well. I had bought another 9800GX2 over the summer and was going to SLI them but it isn't so amazing, plus spacing was an issue, so I sold them. I mean I know they are kind of old now (in computer world) but you could try two 8800GT extremes...I had one 8800GT and an 8800GT extreme SLI'ed together and it worked well. GL!
This thread caught my attention with the Far Cry 2 and SLi problems, because I've not actually had any.
Sorry to join the party late...
I have 2 260s (the 192 core variety) and the framerate I get off them is nothing short of incredible. I thought it'd be another Crysis affair where I have to dick around with some of the settings but no, I'm playing at 1920x1200 (2xAA) in DX10 mode with everything totally maxed out.
Sounds like it could have been a driver issue with your frame rates as just before I played the game, I gave the machine a format (the nvidia drivers crashing annoyed me too much, so after a week of trying to find the problem I just formatted and it's finally 100% reliable) and shoved the 180.43 drivers straight in. I'm very impressed personally.
