i just got a new job and its time for me to upgrade.

my current rig is in my sig. i will be replacing my motherboard, RAM, GPU and maybe my CPU. eventually SDD but im currently happy with my RAID performance everything else will still be used.

im having trouble deciding if i want to upgrade to an AM3 board with DDR3 or sell my 965 and build a core I5 based system. i want to get a GTX 470 this time around want to SLI in the future.

there are tons of SLI/crossfire capable boards on intels side of the spectrum but only two SLI capable boards for AM3 that i have found but i havent been able to find any good reviews for them. ill be getting ~$700 a paycheck so my budget for the jump to DDR3 will be about $500-$600 for the DDR3 motherboard upgrade. GPU upgrade will be on a separate budget in the future

i want to know what OCN thinks, go AM3 and test my luck with an AM3 Nforce 980a mother board and have extra cash or go LGA 1156 with an i5 750 or i7 860 and have the freedom to go SLI or CrossfireX when ever i choose?

your 965 is just as good as an i7 860/i5 750.

If I were you I would wait for the cpu upgrade until the bulldozer chips come out (8 cores in Q1-Q2 of next year) and for now get this motherboard if you can afford it: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-644-_-Product or if thats too pricy for you go with this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-441-_-Product or that 980a motherboard if you like it.

Building an 1156 socket build will give you little or no performance increase whatsoever, and will cost 450$ or more (150$+ for mobo 100$+ for ram and 200$+ for cpu) whereas an amd upgrade will only cost 300$ or so (~200$ for mobo and 100$ for ram...) and then you will have 600$ or more for a beastly 8 core bulldozer chip when they come out.

The only upgrade you could get as of now that would bring any noticeable performance increase at all would be a 1055t, but that isnt a very good upgrade right now because will be left in the dust once the new bulldozer chips come out. You should only go with a 1055t though if you HAVE to buy right now

i stumbled across this thread http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/6708...therboard.html so motherboard choice has broadened as well as give me the choice of SLI or CrossfireX. it would save me tons of money to stay with AM3 and allow me to get an SSD or upgrade my GPU sooner. i was looking at getting this board http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128441

and i would need to pick a good set of DDR3 1600 to go with it.

all in all it would be smarter for me to stick with AMD for now. i get lost in my head sometimes.
