Good cheaper photo editing programs

OK so the GF is starting to look into getting some photo editing programs. I think she has been reading up on CS, lightroom, adobe elements so far. All of these range greatly in price and seem to have different areas of "what you need".

So what do you guys use and what do you recommend?

What is the cheapest route to start out with for a more hobbiest side but with enough features to actually make it worth while?

As allways thanks a bunch for any input.

Well it depends on what type of editing she will be doing.

For now basically just clean up stuff, over exposure, stuff like that. I dont know as much as she does but thats what I gather from what she says. Basically just taking photos and maybe working them a bit afterwards to make them look better.

I am not sure what all poeple use these programs for myself. I just like resizing and cropping and thats it lol.

Well I like using Lightroom 2 and Aperture for editing RAW photos.
Thanks Marin, would rep if could. So far we dont have any program really besides the canon stuff so besides getting a tripod our next step is a editing program.
I'd highly reccommend Lightroom 2, its very intuitive and has plenty of features- definatley worth the price.

I dont know much about photo editing, so dont yell at me if this is a completely stupid suggestion, but have you seen GIMP? Its open source/free.

Take a look at Photoshop Elements 7. I use it and it can do everything Lightroom can and more and is half the price. It's an awesome RAW editor with Adobe Camera RAW.

GIMP is awesome, not as good as Photoshop or Lightroom, but very good.

Yeah elements for the more in-depth editing, but Lightroom should be able to batch and fix most everything!
Elements is a trimmed down version of Photoshop yet still has more than enough for quite powerful photo editing and adjustments. Great software.

Yeah, but they've tweaked the interface to look a bit more like Lightroom, so I actually prefer using it over CS3

Ahh I see... I must admit it's a while since I've used either Lightroom or Elements now as I'm using CS4 more and more for everthing these days.

GIMP2 is unbeatable for the price, and it made more for photos than general art crap like Photoshop.

Lightroom 2 is great, I use it linked with CS3 and love it, but it's way more than what I need. Elements is very powerful, and imo easier to learn than CS2/3/4.

If she just wants to mess around some, you should give GIMP a chance.
Thanks guys, well I got gimp installed on my vista (64bit version), installed flawlessly and seems pretty easy to mess with so Im gonna get the XP version installed on her computer.

I told her she may as well play with the free stuff first and see how she likes it, better to find out if you like free stuff first then to buy something and find out you like the free stuff after lol.

Thanks for the input everyone.

GIMP is very good (I did lots of HDRs with GIMP), but if it doesn't cut the muster, consider Elements, you can get for $99 these days.
