Good PSU?

518 Views 18 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Akisame
The PSU is an OCZ 500W. After rebate it's 40 bucks.
It would be used to run the following:
P35
2x1GB ram
hard drive
dvd drive
E4500
8600GT

Thanks. Rep to good answers.

The OCZ will work fine but I'd spend a little more for the 600w model in case you want to upgrade to a better video card in the future.

Which OCZ 500w? There are at least 3 different models with completely different quality.

Maybe you should look at one of the modular PSU's for OCZ? I just bought a modular and they are much easier to work with.

It's going to the family computer. I'm trying to keep the budget as low as possible but not cut corners too much.
the 500w is gonna be good enough for way more than a 8600gt. a gts 250 (9800gtx+) would work fine and probably 1 gtx 260 (i run mine on a 550 and im not close to the limit).

Is this a good PSU as in quality and price? I know what it will power a 8600GT.

It will be more than enough for an 8800gt.

I would trust a 450W Corsair (Seasonic) psu, over a "OCZ" whether its made by FSP or whomever, any day.

Corsair

I know it seems to be over your budget, but I am sure it will be well spent. Just another option....

Yeah, the first brand I wanted was Corsair but they are pricey (I'm sure they are worth it though). The more powerful ones start at $90.

I am assming 500w psu refers to one of them. Based on what you have, single 8800GT is fine. 8800GT is a 105w GPU.

Just to give you an idea, my sig. rig's 9800GT is OCed to ~750/1050 and I am pulling roughly 300Watts full load. That is Crysis and Fallout 3.

UT3 oddly with all graphics maxed is around 250Watts.

Idles at ~170W.
