Gotta go with the asus, but I would say nay to dual core for long term.

What would you recommend as an alternative?

if your resolution is at 1680/1050 or higher i would go for the asus.
Also, I'm reading around these forums and I'm surprised to see overwhelming support for Vista. Given the rig in the OP (not the broken 5 year old rig in my signature), what OS would you guys recommend? My current plan is to use my XP Home Edition and reevaluate upon Windows 7 release.

Notice the motherboard's 16GB RAM max, and assume my willingness to put in more RAM than the planned 4GB base in the future.

I'm surprised with the support for Vista as well. If you have a copy of the Windows 7 Beta I suggest it. It's incredibly stable and fast. Also, 4 GBs of RAM will probably be enough unless you plan on doing some hardcore video encoding or image rendering.

One of the Quads. Q6600 or Q6700 if you can still find them. If you can't find those, any of the quad cores will suffice.

2x2gb would be better, less stress on the NB than running 4 sticks, if you can afford it go with a Q9550 too, with that UD3P you have a good change of hitting 4ghz.

Oh and I voted ASUS, simply because it's 1gb rather the 512mb, depends what res you are planning on playing at though.
Why not go with something like this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102813 or this if you want more memory
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102809
It will be cheaper than getting 2x 4850 ,you'll have the option of quadfire(?), and as well be faster than a single 4870
Also if still want to get a 4870 get this one , it's alot cheaper and i believe it's better than asus http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150352
or this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814150339
And are you gonna get another PSU or use the one that is in your new case?
And a price drop is coming soon

The HD4870 is easily the winner in performance but not neccesarily bang for buck. The best price/performance parts out right now imo are

E5200
UD3P
2x HD4830

That will give you the best performance in games and best price/performance ratio

Would you say that 4x1 is more efficient, even if it is more stressful on the MB?
Else equal, the Q9550 is out of my current price range

If only my current drives on my dead rig were compatible with the motherboard.

Those reviews are all sketch, imo. How much faith do you guys put into them?
I was planning to use the PSU in the new case, yes. Better price from my initial browsing, and it is good enough on paper.
Price drop on what? Nature of the industry to have price drops. New tech soon, price drops soon.

Those are suspiciously cheap, I'll have to consider them

The E5200 is tempting.
Nice to see I'm getting the UD3P anyways.
I'm a skeptic about bridging.

Price drop on the 4000 series, since they are going to release new cards in april
Thanks everyone for the input. This was a wonderful cannonball splash of an entrance into this forum. I'm looking for a more decisive CPU vote, so I'm going to make a new thread like the polltard that I am.

I'll be seeing you guys around!
Just kidding. I've decided I'm going to go with the Q6600 due to the importance of the CPU.

Q6600
GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P
ASUS 1GB Radeon HD 4870
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) DDR2 800
Seagate Barracuda 250GB 3.0Gb/s
HEC MicroATX Mini Tower Computer Case with 585W Power Supply
Hi guys. Short revive. Do you think between the ASUS graphics card and the other parts the case's 585W power supply will be enough? Am I going to have a problem there?

I had assumed some one would've noticed that by now, but I might as well ask anyways.
