[Sir Overkill]

So I have been getting these Grey screens for a while now. Not sure what it is really as I did have it with my old graphics card, Could it be my motherboard? or even CPU?

Im thinking more my Graphics card or maby a PCI slot? Well If you guys could help me im not too sure what it is or how to get rid of it

Its not just a all grey screen its like different lines of grey in different shades going down the screen in different shape lines aswell.(not completely strait lines, curved slightly)

If anyone could help and comment on this matter I would be very thankful.

EDIT: Stock clocks on the GPU with stock cooling. And I would get a screenshot but its impossible to know when it may happen, it dosent seem to make a difference if its in game or not. It happens alot(once a day) just surfing forums.

Also, does it happen when both monitors are connected? Does it happen to both of them at the same time?

Ok im not sure what drivers im using, I just Downloaded the newest ones on the Nvidia site when I got the card, a couple months ago.

For the last few days I have been using both monitors to try to see if it happens on both, normally I just use one or the other I rarely use both at the moment.

And it just happened before and it only happened on one monitor well the TV actully. Anyone know what this could mean? I am sure its not the card as I was getting the same thing with my old card.

Any feedback would be greatly appricated as I really want to find out what this is and fix it!

Update the BIOS on your motherboard to the latest version (even if it is a beta) and update the BIOS on the GTX 580 as well. Try that and see how everything works afterward.

What is the newest bios for my motherboard? Also I really don't think updating the bios on the 580 will help the problem, because I had the problem with another card before this one. Which is why I think it is the motherboard.

Is your system completely locking up when it happens or is it just a display error? You said it only happens on one of your monitors, right (the LCDTV)? Could it be a faulty HDMI cable?

Latest motherboard BIOS will be found from either, or (with the Tweaktown forum being updated more frequently):

I brought up flashing the GPU BIOS as well because there have been a number of unfortunate individuals who experience incompatibility issues with 400/500 series Nvidia hardware. While your two video card experience may point to your motherboard, it's good to cover all of your bases anyway and really can't hurt your situation any worse than it already is. Plus, if it is an issue particular when using the TV, then a newer GPU BIOS might help resolve that.

Also, you're going to have to do a little more on your part to find out which drivers you have installed. When installing Nvidia drivers, the installation EXE will create an Nvidia folder on your C:\ drive with one of the subfolders named after the driver revision. The newest official release drivers are 270.61, which were released earlier this week, so if you haven't already, you should update to those as well. And make sure that when you are installing them to do a custom installation and place a check mark next to the "Perform Clean Installation" box.

If I were in your situation, I would take the few extra steps to clean out your computer of old drivers with Driver Sweeper:

Try all the above and report back your results.

It will be hard though because it only really happens around once maby twice a day(and I mean a whole day). So I will have to try another cable and just chill on the pc lol.

Is using Driver sweeper a good idea? I haver been told it can cause alot of problems?

Well, it's like I said above, you can certainly try to perform the clean installation first and see if that helps. However, in your situation, I have a feeling you may need to do a more thorough cleaning of old drivers with Driver Sweeper, assuming it even is a driver issue to begin with. In my experience, using Driver Sweeper (or any driver cleaning program for that matter) has not resulted in any further problems that didn't already exist.

However, I think you will have better luck with the BIOS updates for both the motherboard and graphics card.

If possible, I think a try to test out your GPU and monitor/TV on a different computer just to see if it was the GPU being the issue. This may also confirm or disprove compatibility issues with your current computer's hardware.

If that doesn't work, you could try to further rule out a software issue by doing a format and reinstallation of Windows. It's not the ideal solution, but it is an option if you are up for it.

OK. Have installed new drivers on both the card and board, I dident use Driver sweeper. Should I use it? do you guys think it will fix it?

Also my other card did the same thing so its not the card, well I dont think it is.

Has anybody else had this grey screen im talking about? Wish I could get a pic but that would be very hard.

Anyways any advice would be good, do you think it would still do it if I has two more cards in SLI with it?

Could it be the North Bridge? Just a guess. I've had weird graphical issues before because the Northbridge on a motherboard was defective.

i've had this happen with a few ATI cards and it was drivers. so maybe its that? have you tried a full reinstall? i know its a mission but could be a conflicting driver?

I don't know if this is possible, but if you can get a hold of an AMD card and try that out for a while, see if the issues are still repeating. You've already tested a GTX 580 and a GT 430, so the next logical step to find out is if a different GPU with a whole different set of drivers may resolve the problem.
