[Gspeak] fundamentally changing the way we use our machines

The SOE's combination of gestural i/o, recombinant networking, and real-world pixels brings the first major step in computer interface since 1984; starting today, g-speak will fundamentally change the way people use machines at work, in the living room, in conference rooms, in vehicles. The g-speak platform is a complete application development and execution environment that redresses the dire constriction of human intent imposed by traditional GUIs. Its idiom of spatial immediacy and information responsive to real-world geometry enables a necessary new kind of work: data-intensive, embodied, real-time, predicated on universal human expertise.
Some of the SOE's core ideas are already familiar from the film Minority Report, whose characters performed forensic analysis using massive, gesturally driven displays. The similarity is no coincidence: one of Oblong's founders served as science advisor to Minority Report and based the design of those scenes directly on his earlier work at MIT.

Is this the future for PC's?

Pretty cool, but stuff like this and Natal all have staged videos to make the things look like they work perfect. I'm curious to see how this plays out and see it in real life.

edit: wow it was just at my sisters college -.-;
Awesome!!!!! Minority report anyone?

Yeah, that's usually the downfall of revolutionary technology (I'm not being sarcastic, if anyone is wondering).

It is very fatiguing to wave your arms around for hours.

Anyone else not like having to use gestures? I can't wait until these systems are smart enough to tell the minute muscle and hand shape changes so I don't have to memorize a bunch of cumbersome gestures.

This is very true, the entire Natal thing with Peter Monyleux was scripted, and any reporters that wanted to try it out were heavily directed on what to do (and equally, what they didn't want them to do).

I don't get why they're pushing this technology so hard either. It's not just tiring but annoying. I'd much rather they start to invest in more Brain-Computer Interface technology (non-invasive of course though).

We can dream...

Doesn't natal do this and then some?

WHAT?

Did you even watch the video in the OP? Have you seen the Natal video?
If you said yes to both of those questions, then I would suggest going back over both. Natal is completely different from this.
People were just saying they think the video is scripted, with people acting like they are controlling it. (which most all people thought that about natal also)

The 2 have nothing in common besides that...

Like the OCZ NIA?

Overall I think it's a cool idea. I don't really like that fact to use my PC I'll have to flail around. But, there will be a use for this other then in the "home PC" setting. I think it's a nice start to something that could prove useful for certain professions.

I agree that in it's current form there is not much use for the average user. I can see where this would be good for control rooms at factories or subway systems, stuff like that where you can see the whole overview of the entire system up on a huge screen and then be able to make adjustments and such with gestures. For home use this is merely a stepping stone to more high fidelity movement tracking which can be useful when we all have our three-dimensional holographic desktops laid out on our actual desktop, then this motion based control will allow us to manipulate in three-dimensions MUCH better than any other sort of input device.

OCZ NIA isn't a true BCI. It relies on muscle movements as well as some brain activity.

That would be a great way to to flight traffic control, or probably surveillance & intelligence work.
Definitely very applicable and probably very helpful to many professions, but I don't see it replacing the mouse and keyboard for home users. Like many others have mentioned, I'd rather not be flailing wildly just to browse OCN, watch videos, or play games.
