GTA 4 Freezing up

5048 Views 13 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  tbates1244
I have a problem in which sometimes the GTA 4 Freezes and not just the gta 4 but the whole computer. I had to do a hard restart to fix it and sometimes it happens agian after some gameplay. So far i had to do like 10 hard restarts just to continue playing the game and i know those restarts can't be good for my comp.
It seems to happen everytime my gpu goes over 64 c which is in no way near max.

GTA 4 is still kinda buggy, even with the 2 patches. Mine freezes, but only about once every couple of days or so. It could just be a bug in the game.

Also GTA 4 puts a good deal of load on the CPU, so if your CPU Overclock is not *quite* stable, then it might run some less CPU dependent games fine but freeze in others.

What program are you stress testing the CPU with and how/how long are you testing?

And are you OCing your 9800GTX+? (doesn't say in your sig) Your GPU OC could be causing the PC to freeze.

Also, what drivers are you using for your 9800GTX+?

NVidia had a bug that caused the video card to crash, that was fixed in driver version 182.06 released less than a month ago. although not specific to GTA

Just the poorly written code. Wait a little longer for R* to release a new patch (hopefully third time's the charm), and it will be fixed.
I really hope they fix that bloody game.
Should never have been released in the first place
lol @ people mad about GTA4 not running right on their PC, it was always best ran on a console

Just use med or low texture. Make sure the game interface only see's half of your actual vram.

If your vram is 512Mb use 256. That's the only way I can find around the memleak. Even if you get close to 3/4 of your vram it will crash. You can turn up car detail. And draw distance. A little bit at a time : )

More than likely the 178.xx's

Try a newer driver from NVidia's website.

182.08 are the most currently available (released March 3), but some have complained of slower performance, and lower FPS in games, using these drivers.

The 182.06 drivers (released Feb 18) specifically fixes an issue in single card 8800/9800 gt/gts/gtx configurations where the video card crashes when changing power states, which happens quite often in games...

Solved my problem, but I'm still running the 182.06's.

Good luck with that, this game has a huge memory leak. I can run all details to max @ 1680x1050 in GTA IV with my setup and get 40-60fps, but it will start stuttering really bad after an hour of play. I had to lower my settings to medium and it lasts a little bit longer, 3-4 hours then I have to reboot to continue playing.

They need to patch this crappy game. ASAP

Like the above user's said, the drivers that came with your graphics card are probably the older 178 drivers. Get the newest drivers from Nvidia, as someone else already suggested. The newest version is v182.06. Your problem is either a bug in the game or the fact that your using old drivers. I also find that the Nvidia drivers enhanced for GTA 4 (v180.84) work well for me too.
