GTA IV can my rig handle it?

1435 Views 31 Replies 15 Participants Last post by  TestECull
Ive seen in some posts that even quad cores lag on GTA IV. Is that true or are they the kind of people who think 30fps is slow?
Upgrading is not an option for now because Im saving for a new guitar.
If anyone has played it at good fps on a single core pls. tell me

These are the rigs:

CPU: AMD Sempron LE-1150 overclocked to 2.45 Ghz (2.0Ghz stock)
GPU: PowerColor HD5770 1GB GDDR5
RAM: 2x1GB Transcend DDR2-667

CPU: Intel Pentium 4 3.2 Ghz
GPU: Powercolor x1650 pro 512mb 128bit
RAM: 2x1GB

I don't think you'll be able to run an average of 30FPS on high settings. The game is very CPU dependent.
I know this isnt the answer you are looking for, but dont even try it. my e4300 (daul core 1.8ghz) only got 20fps on lowest settings. ofc that was with an 8500gt, but regardless.
totally maxed out i get around 20-25fps. I play on medium and get around 40. (1680x1050)
Get yourself a daulcore to play this game, It is more demanding than crysis.

But id say 1024x768, low-medium settings, youd get around 20fps
It fails on my lappy and my CPU is 2.8 and my ram is 4GB, so I don't think so...but my GPU sucks a$$, however as stated, it's mainly CPU dependent.
Erm, are you StillLegendary2k?

Same processor, you have a mediocre looking woman as your avatar, and you're talking about running games on underspec machines.

If you're not him, then you should hook up with him, he's in the Phillipines as well I believe. You guys could LAN up and play Crysis @ 50FPS while looking at the sky.

And to answer your question... it might run, but it will not run *well*.

I play on dual core and I get about 20 fps with low settings at 1024x768, although it's a laptop, so a custom rig should fare better.
Your CPU makes me want to answer "no". I'd definitely think about upgrading that CPU if you want decent framerates. As many people have said, the game is highly CPU dependent.
If this is SL2K, he started a thread exactly like this not long ago, then went on to 'prove' us all wrong by showing that he COULD run GTA4 at abysmally low settings in empty areas with playable FPS.

I assume this will play out similarly?

OP, think of it this way. Could you ride a bike (a pedal bike, not a motorbike) 60 miles to work, and 60 miles back every day? Yes, you could, but it would not be optimal.

Same with StillLegendary something-or-another
And that's a great way of wording it too!

How was I being rude? Just throwing it out there before everybody jumps on this thread and it turns into another successful troll by Still Legendary.

Look at it - he's talking about he same CPU as he's had forever in his eMachines, he's got a picture of an average looking woman, and he's from the Phillipines (although SL2K did say he was in Hollywood for a time I believe).

If I'm wrong, and it's just a freaky coincidence, then I'm wrong - no big deal.

And regardless, I did answer his question.

It'll run, but it'll be pointless to play it. You'll get a lot of bad framerates unless you play it with the settings fairly low and the resolution low as well. It may play some games fine, but GTA IV is one of the worst games in my opinion to successfully run well.

I just now am finally running the game at around 40-50FPS, and still dip into the low 30s at times, and I'm using an i5 and a 4890.

Trust me, having the draw distance low enough to run the game is a pain.

When I play, cars pop up in front of me while I'm driving and I crash into everything.

Maybe a bit exaggerated but that's probably what's going to happen to your system.

LOL thats funny
but I dont know him.
Ill go find him and ask him if he ran gta good.

I thought swapping out my stronger gpu to help the sempron will get more fps, if it wont gain anything then Ill return the 9800gt to the sempron
How about my sig rig can it handle it? I wont buy a quad just for gta

How is it insulting?

Both the OP's setup and Legendary's setup will get about that framerate while looking into the sky. (In fact, those are the 'results' that Legendary posted a while back) Is it the 'hook up' part? Didn't mean that in any other way than 'meet up'.

It was meant as "your system is underpowered for modern games".

Either way, it wasn't directed at you, so don't get insulted. Let him deal with it, he'll let me know if it was insulting.

Yes very fun without god mode! Basically turns the NRG (fastest motorbike) into a suicide machine!
