Sig rig is up to date.

Here's the problem, I cannot for the life of me get GTA IV EFLC to work on my sig rig anymore since I switched to Windows 8.1. Regular GTA IV works fine. EFLC does not, it just crashes to desktop with no reason. Both games are on the same version (Steam........up to date patches and everything, with no mods). EFLC was working just fine in Windows 7 before I went to 8.1 about a week or so ago.

Anybody have any ideas? This is driving me nuts because EFLC is my favorite one to play in multiplayer.

I am running 8.1 as well and everything worked great last time I tried. I played The Ballad of Gay Tony and had no issues starting it nor while playing it. You might want to reinstall games for windows live. See here why.

I quite literally JUST got all my Steam games installed like 2 days ago. I'm on the latest WHQL drivers as of about a week ago. I mean I JUST installed everything, including the OS. I didn't even save my games drive, I wiped that too. So GFWL is a brand new install as well.....and it works for all of my other GFWL titles including regular GTA IV.

Only thing that I can personally think of is a problem with my saved game since I saved my "My Docs" folder over (all my personal folders). However, I don't think that's where the save is at for GTA IV, or at least not the settings.

I have not tried playing the actual GAME yet, but the benchmark goes all the way to the end, then crashes to desktop when its done (before it shows the results). So I would assume the game itself would also crash.

In this case I dont really know what the issue might be especially considering the fact that you have done a clean install. Back up your saves and delete the actual GTA IV save directory. Then restart the game and start a new one, that way it should create a new save game directory, see if the issue persists.

Funny thing is, it appears that the GTA IV saved game location is either in the install directory, or in the Appdata folder.......which both are recently clean. It has to be something weird with 8.1 and / or my hardware. Because it was working just fine with Windows 7 before I formatted and put 8.1 on here. Maybe a very finicky / weird AMD driver bug? It could be about that time that I FINALLY run into one of these supposed "bad drivers" from AMD.

Again, for that, i'm on the latest (as of a week or two ago) WHQL.

Can you change graphics options?

I would advise you setting the following launching options for GTA IV, -nomemrestrict -norestrictions -availablevidmem 20.0 (if 20.0 does not work try different numbers but it must always finish with the .0)
The only issue that I had when playing GTA IV on windows 8 was the fact that I could not change graphical options but after setting those launch lines, I resolved the problem and from that point the game ran without any issues and never crashed.

Of course I can. I already have the "-norestrictions" flag on. Is it possible adding those other flags will do it, even though regular GTA IV works fine with just the "-norestrictions" flag?

The other lines tell the game to use additional VRAM as the game itself only recognizes 2 GBs while your 7970 has 3. That might as well be an issue causing your crashes.

Just put those lines in there........same thing. Benchmark works till its over then crash to desktop right when it tries to go back to the menu (the results menu). I figure if the benchmark crashes the game will too.

So you havent actually tried running the actual game? There might be a bug with the benchrmark tool which results in a crash. I would advise you trying out playing the game. Otherwise you can set the compatibility mode to either windows 8 or 7 and see if that will help.

The benchmark was fine in 7. I just assumed that if the benchmark crashes, the game will too. I'd hate to sit there and play for an hour, be right in the middle of a really awesome cop chase, and then CRASH.

You made me reinstall the game and try it out again. I decided to replay TBOGT as it was my favourite expansion. Its good to be back in Liberty City not gonna lie. The benchmark crashes for me as well after the helicopter part ends. However I have played the story for two hours and no crashes so far, I also doubt that I will crash to say the truth. I think there is an issue with the benchmarking tool. So yeah I am playing the game and I am enjoying it once again just like I enjoyed playing it for the first time on PS3. No issues and no crashes. The only thing is that V-Sync locks the framerate to 54 fps instead of 60 for some strange reason. Shame the game is poorly optimized but I think we all have accepted this already. I just hope that GTA V wont follow its foot steps.
