Anyway, I was wondering if you guys could help me come back up to date with tech, like where are we now after over a year almost now?

AMD fanboys love the MOAR cores thing (they have an 8core cpu) I personally havent used it but from what I have heard, the performance is disappointing.

By awesome, assuming you mean price/performance, go for a 3570k if you want to oc it. OR a Xeon e3-1230v2 (it is basically an i7 3770 for a fraction of the price)
Your i5 should suffice for the latest games if you get a good overclock on it.

Yeah, i just upgraded from an i3 after I was paid for an iOS app I wrote for this guy.

In Terms of CPUs:

Intel is still winning when it comes to performance, AMD is still adding moar cores!

In Terms of GPUs:

AMD > Nvidia this generation of GPUs.

Unless of course you count the GTX Titan.
