GTX 280 or GTX 285

I am debating between the 2 GFX cards. I know that the 285 is only a lil faster, but I am wondering.
1 - What size gpu is the 280? 65nm? is the 285 55nm?
2 - Power wise, is the GTX 280 more or less power hungry?
3 - Is the GTX 285 worth the upgrade?

I will be playing on my 19" screen and then eventually a 24" 1920x1200 monitor. It will go with my sig rig and be watercooled. I wanna OC it also.

in reality theres not like a BIG difference maybe like 5 more fps?
but anyway i would still get the gtx 285. because on newegg the cheapest 280 is like 320 and the cheapest 285 is like 340.
only 20 more dollars
It all depends on the price. Right now Frys has the BFG GTX 280 for $269 ($249 with $20 MIR) which is almost $100 less then a GTX 285. So I would get the GTX 280 for that reason alone. But looking at your resolution, you are better getting a GTX 260 for under $190.

edit: It looks like it is only available for in-store P/U.
Go for the GTX285, its has a 55nm die whereas the GTX280 65nm die.

Also the 285 is clocked faster than the 280 and uses less power

I just bought the 285's and love the setup. However, its not worth the $100+ price difference per card imho. Had I been a patient human being I would have jumped on the 280's ericeod mentioned above... but the GTX85's were available locally.
ericeod - I am getting a 24" monitor and that is why I want the bigger GPU. If I was staying with the 19" I wouldn't upgrade.

Well I was looking at GTX 280's and they were like $50-$100 cheaper than the GTX 285. So basically I am wondering, is that $$ difference worth it? I will have the same PSU as I have now, so will that be able to handle it fine?
go for whichever is cheaper - it's not a big difference between the 2. that GTX 280 linked above is a good one.

the GTX 285 is 55nm if i remember correctly, which means it should consume less power. i don't think the price justifies the upgrade though, unless it's like 20 or max 40 dollars more
The 620w corsair is fine for single card.

The price difference is not worth it if its $100 difference. $50 or less then I would go with the 285. I have a pair of BFG 285's and they are excellent performers.

Too bad that test is way off for the GTX295....

I bought GTX295's based in part on reviews like Tom's compared to my X2's. Once I got the cards and starting actual testing of COD WAW and COD4, I quickly realized that the 4870X2 is faster than the GTX295 at 1920x1200 regardless of graphic options enabled.

Even my pair of GTX 260 216's are faster than my GTX295.

285 is 55nm, 280 is 65nm. The 285 uses way less power (183w vs 236)
Its worth the price difference. Also it uses 2x6pin instead of 1x6+1x8pin. The difference shouldnt be $100, if it is, get the 280. The difference should be closer to $50. The 285 starts at $309.99 AR, a good price imho

Wow that power difference does push me towards the GTX 285. Although, I wish the performance was better then it would be easy to get the 285. For some reason $300 on a graphics card seems so expensive now. I bought a 7800GT for $300 back in the day and had no problem with that lol. I guess the 7800GT was 2nd to only the 7800GTX where as the GTX 285 isn't the 2nd best card available. Hopefully the prices will drop when the 4890 comes out and then I will snatch one up.

Id get the GTX 285 since it runs a lot cooler than the GTX 280.
Umm hands down the 285. I have seen both cards in action and the temp difference is what sells this card.

jonnyguru has 3 gtx 280's running on a bfg 800watt psu, the whole system was pulling something like 730 watts, brb i am going to find that link....

The bottom line:

GTX285 is the most powerful single gpu / single card solution.

GTX295 is the most powerful multi-gpu / single card solution.

GTX285 SLI is the most powerful complete package.

4870x2 is no slouch but if your comparing total fps performance then it looses in 75% of the benches (+/- 10 fps) to the GTX295 and gets killed by GTX285 SLI.

The point of interest is the cost to compete. The GTX285 SLI will run you about $725 USD total with a 10-25 fps increase overall in a few games... the 4870x2 wins for cost/performance. I have had both in my sig rig and if you are after performance (willing to get another 285 in the future) its a no brainer.

Also the 4870x2 at anything above 56% fan speed is crazy loud (high pitched whirrrrrrrrrrrrrrr)... GTX285 SLI at 75% is barely noticeable.

Also, despite other ppl and review I saw a marked improvement in texture quality, lighting and overall visual goodness in GTX285 SLI that my 4870x2 never delivered; if thats worth the extra $225+ to you its not even a contest.

i used to have a corsair 629Hx and as i recall there isnt a 8pin pcie power connector for it. if you do end up going for a GTX 280 and not the 285, then look into finding a 6 pin to 8 pin pcie adapter, otherise you might have to buy a new psu

(not counting ATI), the GTX285 IS the 2nd most powerful card available, so its the same situation as when you bought your 7800GT. And even if you count ATI, only the 4870X2 and GTX295 are faster than the GTX285. So for $300 you are getting one of the fastest cards out.

It does have the 6pin+2pin connectors for the 2 pci-e cords it has so it will work.
I think GTX 285 is the way to go for me. I can get the superclocked EVGA version, I mainly want it because of the 55nm and lower power consumption and heat output. I won't be getting one for a few weeks until the 4890 comes out. I am hoping the 4890 drops the price of the GTX 285 or maybe the 4890 will be so awesome and I will get on of those instead.

Good plan, but too bad you decided to upgrade NOW, after I offered to buy your 8800. I already bought a 9800GT instead.
