if you genuinly think you're going to add a second GTX285 later on then i'd go with the single GTX285 for now just because they'd be awesome in SLi, but otherwise I'd definatley get the 4870X2- its a fantastic card!
4870x2 is better but is is a 300w vs. GTX285 is a 183w GPU. If you plan SLI, GTX285 is the way to go.

How many times do people have to say 4870x2 is better? Are you just looking for more people to help you overcome buyers remorse and keep the GTX285?

turns out the girlfriend said i can buy the second one if i want to, so now the question is should i get the second one? is it worth it?

BTW i ended up opening the GTX 285

The 4870X2 is the more powerful card, by a good margin. The only time it will lose to the 285 is when Crossfire is not supported, and it is only running 1 of the GPUs.

As for the 285 you now have, there is nothing wrong with it - it's a great card. Bang for your buck levels aren't so hot, but it's still great.
If you do indeed add another one later, you will have a formidable PC.
