I am still lost as to what card to get! best buy has a BFG GTX295 for 500 which seems like a good deal compared to the price on the egg. But I have had my heart set on the 5850's due to it having dx11 support. But anyway, I'd figure id ask you guys for some help!!

When are you getting the card, for Christmas?

The 5850 does have DX11 but nVidia has PhysX...

I think this review will give you the answers you want; just make sure to read it in detail.
If you can get your hands on a 5850, definitely go for it. great bang for the buck, overclocks great, isnt as long as a leg.
Honestly depends on what games are you going to play with it.

Some games will get the best result with one card. For example, my GTX 295 as well as my GTX 275 got only min 15-20fps where as my new 5870 got over 27-35 min fps. There's also no point in buying two cards when one will net you min 100fps. Anything over 50fps min you're overspending.

Some games will look better with nvidia over ati. For example, with one game, I could use 16qAA, with ntune bumping other features up further. Whereas 5870 can only do max 8AA in that game. Also the Amb Occ looks better on nvidia over ati.

Also have to do with how much you can spend, what kind of deal you can find. For example, you can find a deal here second hand of GTX 285, 295s, but you'll be hard pressed to find 5850s anywhere.

In the end:
- what can run the game you play at the cheapest cost.

With duel 5850 you'll get the best bang for the buck for a long time. I just bought two, hoping to sell my GTX 295, and the new 5870 I'm running now. If you're looking for a deal, the GTX 275 is the best card for the price. You can buy new at 200 each on ebay. Two of them is already great (better than one GTX 295)

Physx is the sex. Go nvidia. Like ^^^ said 2x GTX 275 will outperform a GTX 295. Either 275 SLI or a 295 will allow you too practically max most of the setting on Crysis at a good resolution. Get another 295 down the road (way downt he road when you actually may need it) and you will have a nice system for years to come.
9500GT as a dedicated physx card anyone? If you can get a 5850 and a cheap 9500GT on ebay, you'll be good to go. But you'd have to upgrade to Windows 7 if you want to run PhysX on Radeon..
EDIT: Ah, your mobo only got 1 PCI-E x16 slot.. I'd vote for the GTX 295. PhysX is a big factor.
295. if you can two 285 would be best.
For sheer power, 295.
I'd go with the 5850, you can always upgrade later to crossfire, the 5850 will handle everything you throw at it right now anyways.

The GTX295 is old tech now.
Ati users are for ATI, nvidia users for NVIDIA, how typical.

And how can people decide what to get? Good luck with your choice xD
I'd go with the 5850, since it's more future-proof and has DX11. DX11 vs PhysX... Who cares about smoke floating around more realistically? Just blocks your view.
price performance wise the 5850 is definately your best bet now. Not saying the 295 is a bad card, not at all.. but it's more expensive, gobbles up more power.. and has no dx11 support. If you want physx you could always add a 9500gt/220gt.
If you can afford a GTX 295, then you can obviously afford a 5870. Which is obviously newer, better technology.

Benefits over the GTX 295:

40nm. Runs cooler. Requires less power. DX11. Faster in some games. And cheaper than the GTX 295. Hell, you can almost grab 2 5850s for the GTX 295's price.
Why are you comparing a 5850 and gtx295?

It should be more like 5870 to gtx295. I would go with the 5870 for dx11, 40nm, newer tech, and lower power draw along with roughly equal performance. Or if you want to throw in a little extra money, get a 5970

Even tho its still more than what I would pay for a 295, and a 5870 would be a better deal, I dont think he can find a 5870 right now and for less than 500.

- The 5870 runs much hotter.
- The performance increase of a 5850 over a single 275 is minuscule

I base that on experience in using 5870, 275, 2x 275 and 295.

The 5870, 5850 is just not worth it for the price.

PhysX debate:

It's basically useless, the only game where you'll use it is batman.

However you should choose nvidia over ati because of various driver benefits, and nvidia looking better in most games. (ntune tweeks, more AA avail for nvidia over ati etc).

Whoa, sounds like you got a bad apple there bud. I base this on the low temps of my own 5870.

EDIT: The GTX 295 is no slouch by any means, but I seriously wouldn't be dropping $500+ on old(er) technology, when the benefits of new cards with newer technology outweigh it. I'd seriously be waiting for Fermi then.

I'd say this depends on your resolution. The 5850 seems to be optimal for 1680x1050. The 5850 does have DX11 going for it, but there is about 1-2 games out now for DX11, and the others don't come out for some months. The 5850 does have the Super Sampling Anti Aliasing now which looks great, but for performance, it's still the GTX 295. PhysX and DX11 shouldn't be deciding factors on what card you get.
Hey,

Should I get the 3rd 285 FTW edition, gettin a 5970 or wait for the fermi's?
