^ This, in games like Mafia II anyways.

In something like Metro 2033, it will keep up fine but seems almost worthless with SLI since there isn't a lot of PhysX in the actual playing.

A 9800GT can't even really keep up to one 470 in Mafia II, not that it doesn't provide more fps than without the 9800, but a stronger card would be advised.

Smallest mem (or cheapest version) possible, since it won't matter for PhysX.

Don't do it. The 9800GT won't be fast enough and it'll essentially slow down your two 470s. It won't be able to do PhysX at the same rate at which the 470s will render frames, so the framerate will suffer.

If you are running on a 1080p monitor, I say use it for physx.

It will hinder a bit the performance over stronger cards ofc, but a couple of 470s is more than enough to give you the FPS you need with the 9800 as physx card.

I wouldn't go out and spend money on one, unless you're REALLY into Mafia 2. That's the only game out there that's going to show a legitimate benefit. This is because of the way that in Mafia 2, certain physX functionality (the Cloth physX, to be precise) will run on the CPU unless you have a DEDICATED physX card. And even the strongest of CPU's don't handle this load all that well.

Additionally, there's the fact that, if you max it out, the rendering portion of the game is actually challenging enough that it's advantageous to have the full power of your SLI470's available for that task.

So other than Mafia 2, there's really no other physX game out for which it's going to be challenging for the 470's to handle 'double-duty' on.

Your cards will crush Batman AA maxed out even with physX turned on.

In Metro2033 the additional physX effects provided by running physX on gpu hardware (activated by checking 'advanced physX effects') are extremely minor, and honestly you wouldn't miss them in the slightest if they were turned off.

One thing I will share with you about running physX on an SLI set, though: You take a 'double-hit' from the physX load when you do so. Reason being is that physX can only run on one card in an SLI set, but the rendering speeds of the cards have to be synchronized. This means that the physX load that happens on the one card is effectively doubled, due to the non-PhysX card having to slow down it's rendering to match the speed of the physX card.

Just something to be aware of

To be honest, even Mafia II, a single GTX470 is more than enough to handle it with everything pushed max, include Physx.
The answer is no.

I completely disagree.

A 470 will be very hard pressed with everything maxed out and physx.
Mafia 2 isn't very demanding, but everything maxed with physx? Not a chance.

I point you to here. You can see from his test, with everything on high and with no physx, a single 470 has an average of about 45 FPS.
Add physx to that, and you are pretty much expecting a choppy 30-35FPS, as physx is extremely demanding on this game.

Yeah, at stock I got an average of around 45 FPS, which was a bit low for me, and that was without physx running. I could add that into the graph if its of interest.

With a 9800GT running physx at stock the 470 was held back by it slightly, but even then with a dedicated card the average was only 40 fps.

Without the 9800GT frames would probably be terrible and probably below 30 fps average.

Just bare in mind that is with physx set to high and the file was unedited which means all cloth apex was present.

Well I'm talking about ingame FPS since I'm no longer care about Mafia II IG benchmark tool. Afaik, the most stressful part of mafia 2 physx is assigned to CPU, and from my little experience with single 480, the game run flawlessly at 1920x1080 with everything pushed max, rock solid 60+ FPS. And if a single 470 is only capable of producing such low FPS, I think I've got a 470x2 in GTX480 form
which makes no sense at all, right.
Anyway, I don't have any GTX470 here to confirm my hypothesis so I could be wrong or right, who knows. I abandoned this game few months ago and maybe there was an update that makes my hypothesis outdated

If you can, yeah. It would be great to see how you compare a 470 with physx on it vs a dedicated card.
It would give perspective on how much a dedicated card can help.
