GTX580 on 520w S12II? [solved]

EDIT: TL;DR of the thread: UPS = fail

So my friend built a computer, with the following specs.

Xeon X3440 (i7 860 equivilent)
4GB ram
GTX580
1 SSD
1 HDD

All running off a Seasonic S12II 520W powersupply.

He now has problems, and says they his motherboard beeps in a pattern that indicates GPU Power issue. Since nV site says the a 580 need 600w, he thinks that the PSU is the problem.

What do you guys think?

Unless the unit is faulty, it definitely isn't the problem. That PSU is enough for a GTX 580. nVidia/ATI's power requirements are also inflated, you can ignore those.

Then whats the problem, gameboy?
How far did he push the card/xeon as far as overclock? (If he has overclocked them)

Well it only happens in some more GPU intensive games like Crysis 2 and BFBC2 on high settings, for other games there generally isn't an issue.

And no overclock.

(and yes, this is my computer)
Seems like it should be enough...

edit nvm I guess first I would double check the connectors and make sure they are all the way in.

Do you have a higher wattage power supply to test with?

nothing with PCI-E and i checked the connectors and they are all the way in

Do you have any voltage changes?
Another q: how old is the psu?
The PSU i'm using is only a 4 months old

and no volt changes at all, everything is at stock
Does your mobo have a 4 pin molex power connector for pcie (near the pcie lanes)

When my PC drew too much power for my old PSU to handle, the PC simply lost all power. I booted back up, downclocked/downvolted my GPU's and all was well.

Your issue definitely isn't a result of of the power supply not being powerful enough. Possible component issue. Start testing each component to find out which it is.

If your PSU did not give enough juice, it would simply ''freeze'' or/and shut down. The problem is elsewhere i think

EDIT: Thinks the same as AgentHydra two post below

the beep comes BEFORE it actualy gos out, wouldn't be very usefull otherwise

as for a molex i havnt been able to find one but ill look again
You know what, I think the issue is the PSU.

If it was a single rail design it would probably work but because it has dual 20A rails, with presumably both PCI-E power connectors and some peripheral connectors on one rail and the EPS +12V and the rest of the peripheral power connectors on the other rail, its probably tripping the OCP.

That would be my best guess.

looking at it, it appears that this would be the issue.

It seems that they put the 2 PCIe connectors on one rail, and everything else on the others. The one rail has 288w available, and it appears that the 580 is drawing more than that.

Now we need to find a replacement for this

it will not work with most psu's under 650w... trust me i've tried

Should be plenty, I ran a heavily oc'd 480 on 38amps.

Make sure he doesn't have a ups that's beeping.

Agreed. 520w should be enough if it was a single rail PSU.

P.S.: If that nailed it, don't forget to give rep to AgentHydra.

Usually, I think it is rude to remind people to give rep, but recently here @ OCN people are giving rep for witty remarks while completely ignoring helpful posts.

Could be a number of things... as I said, it's possible the PSU is faulty, but it definitely isn't down to the PSU being inadequate.

The GTX 580 doesnt draw that much, though.

It will work with any good 500-550w.
