Guide: Easy Lapping

I got sick of the multi-grit approach so I tried something a little different when I lapped my Opty 165.
Lapped with 400 for roughly a half an hour til it was perfectly flat.
Lapped with 1500 for 10-15 minutes til it was smooth.
rubbed with ICD for a few seconds to remove all of the super fine scratches.
Total time = less than an hour

The result:

and a photo negative shot so you can see the complete lack of scratches.

I hope I can help somebody save some cash and some time as well.

I'm also sorry for the quality of the pics, it was a really nice digital camera, approximately five years ago

I thought rubbing it with some kind of polishing compound leaves residue?

Damn that's shiny!
ICD=Innovation Cooling Diamond Thermal Compound. The diamonds in the compound act as a super fine grit paper.

Looks wonderful. A lot better than mine.
nice wow...
Nice, take some HDR shots with lighting from several sources and angles to prove that scratch-less claim

Very nice finish on the lapping job. Didn't ever think of using ICD to use an abrasive. How much did your temps drop?
Mothers mixed into the water while wet sanding actually works the best. My last two steps were 800 & 1000 and the 1000 was wet sanded with Mothers mixed into the water. Then a final polish with mothers only with a jewelers cloth. The residue scare is total BS it's copper, what are you gouing to do to it with Mothers? Anyway for the faint of heart just use ArtiClean Thermal Metal Purifier. My stuff is ICE cold and it works.

I thought metal polish was detrimental to temps?

Next reseat, I'm gonna put my CPU/TRUE through a quick 2000grit round, and buffing with some spare MX-2 to see what happens.

Total BS and a half. Doesn't matter whats on it when you use ArtiClean Thermal Metal Purifier.

I posted my method not because of its effectiveness, but because it only uses two paper grits, and doesn't take very long to do. There are many ways to achieve a good lap, mine just helps save some money and time.

Edit: Also I don't have a delta for my results as I did this lap job simultaneously with a mobo and hsf change. It is staying cool at 2.88ghz though

Would regular isopropyl alcohol do the trick? If so, then I'm definitely going for the polish. I have a whole tube of Autosol here.

I'd be careful what kind of polish you use. Mothers is an abrasive metal polish. I don't know what autosol has in it, but be careful.
