I am about to build a new computer, had been fully planning on using the Gulftown 990x. In doing my homework to hopefully not overlook anything, I have become aware that the 2600k seems to be a nice processor.

My main use of this rig is for Lightroom and Photoshop.

I will be using the Vertex 3 120 for a boot drive, plan on using the Sata III capabilities, and am aiming for a powerful rig that will last a few years.

The choices are between the Gulftown 990x with the Asus Rampage III Extreme, and the Sandy Bridge 2600k with the Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD7-B3. Which would you choose and why? Cost does hold some sway, but not all. Either one will be mild to moderately overclocked.

I'd go with the Sandy Bridge. It's MILES cheaper, and can be overclocked easily to 4.6GHz and up, with a cheap cooler. More if you have a better cooler.

Also, in my opinion, $330 for 8 threads is a lot more cost effective for $1000 for 12 threads.

Is a tiny bit of performance in some aspects worth a substantial amount of money? Only you can answer that question.

In fact, the most expensive processor in the market, the 1000-dollar six-core Core i7-990X Extreme Edition, can be titled the today's fastest CPU only during video processing and transcoding, final rendering and a few specific tasks, such as encryption and batch image processing. As for the majority of general-purpose applications, including contemporary 3D games, it yields significantly to Core i7-2600K. Although the latter CPU has a smaller L3 cache, it can boast much higher relative performance per core.
Taken from pangeltveit's link (I've read the one before..haha).
