I am about to build a new computer, had been fully planning on using the Gulftown 990x. In doing my homework to hopefully not overlook anything, I have become aware that the 2600k seems to be a nice processor.

My main use of this rig is for Lightroom and Photoshop.

I will be using the Vertex 3 120 for a boot drive, plan on using the Sata III capabilities, and am aiming for a powerful rig that will last a few years.

The choices are between the Gulftown 990x with the Asus Rampage III Extreme, and the Sandy Bridge 2600k with the Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD7-B3. Which would you choose and why? Cost does hold some sway, but not all. Either one will be mild to moderately overclocked.

I'd go with the Sandy Bridge. It's MILES cheaper, and can be overclocked easily to 4.6GHz and up, with a cheap cooler. More if you have a better cooler.

Also, in my opinion, $330 for 8 threads is a lot more cost effective for $1000 for 12 threads.

Is a tiny bit of performance in some aspects worth a substantial amount of money? Only you can answer that question.

If I were building right now, I'd go for the SB just because you have an upgrade path when IB comes out, if you want to take that route.

I've already got a 1366, so I'm waiting to see IB and decide to build a monster 1366 or swap out to IB.
