my classmate has a western digital external drive and uses mac. he said the drive quit showing up on the desktop when plugged in. he also said that when he goes into his hardware util's it shows up there but can't be accessed. the drive shows that there is still data taking up space on the drive though. does it sound like a failing drive? and if so if and how could you recover the data?

If he goes into Control Panel> Administrative Tools> Computer Management then under the Storage section, Computer Management, it should show his external HDD there. Does it have a drive letter assigned to it?

If not, your friend needs to right-click on the HDD in question, go to Change Drive Letter and Paths, then click on the Change button and assign a Drive Letter to it from the drop-down list. Use something that won't ever be used by Card Readers, Virtual Drives or other devices, something high in the Alphabet, like X.

The same thing used to happen to me in Vista with my External HDD.

If that doesn't work, then sorry.
