Hey guys.

I am looking for a good and easy to use piece of software that I can use to image my Operating system and for it to be easy to re image my hard drive just incase an issue crops up.

Please do not mention the image backup capabilities within Windows 7. I do not like it as it does not function correctly when I last tried and meant I had to start again so please no Windows 7 image backup.

Thanks.

Active disk (vista boot disk) use it at college easy to use simply click disk to image takes 20mins to do (depends on size of the files on the hdd) and when u need to re-install the image takes even less time and all your files are backed up e.c.t use it at home when my laptop got wiped re-installed it and everything was back to normal best software I've ever used

I was going to recommend Acronis True Image, as it has saved me many times.
When I install an OS I make an image after I get my programs installed so I have a fresh copy if needed that is activated.

I also do images at certain time periods to have a current full backup image

True Image, love it, use it, rely on it.....never had any problems, it has some nice features like you can create a secure zone on any hard drive( I have a spare drive installed just for Acronis backups) , plus you can add a boot sequence via the menu, so if your system bellies up then you can boot straight into a saved backup and restore.

I do enterprise IT, and have tried all of those products, and the best so far has been... Windows 7 (have used this to recover >1 dozen times). Here are my experiences with other products:

Acronis isn't too bad, but I have had it give me lots of issues detecting newer chipsets, and trying to do stuff over the network. I tried it once, messed with it for a weekend to restore my image backup, and it failed me. I think it was able to detect my RAID, but was not able to detect the SATA HDD the image was on. Eventually had to move that to another system, and streamed over the network overnight.

Symantec Ghost is not really for imaging for backups, but rather imaging for large scale deployments. It requires a seperate server for the imaging, but if you do that, and start a new OS and programs from scratch, then it is pretty good.

I have heard people having great success with Windows Home Server handling incremental image backups, but I have not tried that my self.

Cheers !, The thing that annoyed me about the Image I made through WIN7 was that when I tried to recover it, it kept stating I was not using the correct Recovery disk or something similar which I was, I even tried others and the OS disk itself. The OS disk has the option to recover your system via an image as it is...but it would not let me so I have lost confidence in it I have to say.

d000dz you shouls have used PARAGON hard disk manager, it is not a dedicated hard disk imaging tool, but the imaging part of it is awesome.

Where i work we use this a lot to rebuild corrupted machines and the like, very handy. The tool also contains other things but we dont use em.

Clonezilla.

I use it at work for multiple customers. Used with DRBL, it can be used for a clone server, creating and deploying images across the network to hundreds of clients at the same time. It can be used in standalone mode to clone and restore an entire disk or individual partition.

Acronis is also used here but only for one customer. We just upgraded to the snap server software to deploy over the network.

For linux we have also used Mondo/Mindi. Great stuff!
