has anyone else tried new IE8 Beta 2?

I downloaded it for my father, who was having problems with one of his favorite sites displaying on Firefox, and to tell the truth it is really an improvement over IE7 for users like my Dad who like content suggestions and such. I'm really impressed with Microsoft for the first time in quite a while. It is also MUCH faster than any version of IE I have ever seen, as it seems exactly as fast as FF. I think I'm going to give it a go for real and customize it to the way I like just to see where it gets me.

I am always looking for new stuff just to keep it different. I tried Opera and it was cool, but too slow and the best features for me were just plain useless like the page preview and such. Chrome is just ******ed, I don't care what anybody says.

I love FF and all, but I'm no fanboy of anything. Maybe you some of you guys should give it a chance. After all, browsing is no fun unless you keep it fresh.

Wouldn't touch it with a barge-pole; happy with my FF + Op combo, lol.

Whenever I see a new release for IE I just think, "Aha! It must have got worse!". Not a fanboy - just hate IE (Passionately).
Same here. I use IE for windows update only.
Giving IE8 a "chance" is the same as having unprotected sex with someone who has an STD...

Come on people lets not bash IE so much. Especially if you haven't even tried it.

Why would you download a virus?

I'm sure the new IE is a great improvement over the old one, but once you get used to FF and get it pimped out with all of your favorite addons, it's hard to go back to anything else.

I used to love OCN because it was all about the "pursuit of performance." Anymore it just seems like a bunch of fanboys who would rather lose performance rather than try something that is not considered "cool."

Hating something before you try it is what holds back innovation. What if people had done it with FF when it first came out? I feel more sorry for you guys even more than someone who would rather buy a GX280 and a Phenom 9950 because you say you hate ATI and Intel.

Sad.

It's not about coolness. We all have our addons and themes that we love and use everyday... if we switched to IE, we'd have to get used to it again AND lose everything with nothing similar in sight.

Yeah, I'm thinking the same thing. It's a pain in the ass to find similar add-ons after using FF for all this time. It did import most of my add-ons I have in FF like AVG Safe Search, all of my players like Flash, the Java plugin, and all of my favs. The "suggested sites" thing is cool. If you are on a site you just click it and it gives you a drop-down with links to sites that are similar to the one that you are on. Seems like a real handy feature for when you are doing research for school.

Its also got these things called Accelerators and a new feed reader that uses "slices" that could eventually develop into something cool when more devs and web masters begin playing around with them.

Did I mention it was open-source with a developer console?

It's still in Beta so there is going to be very little that will get me to switch over as of yet, but I will be keeping an eye on it for sure.

Sorry if I'm not all about "keeping it fresh". When it comes to online browsing all I care about is Security, privacy and my other addons that make things safer and easier for me. IE has to prove to me that it can provide me these things before I will switch over.

I will give FF its due. When there is a security issue, mozilla are fast to work for a fix. But do you honestly think that if FF had the same market share as IE it would be as secure. Because IE (and Windows for that matter) are what average joe uses, all exploits are generally focused towards this.
TBH though, who needs security, just be sensible about where you go and what you do and you will have no issues.

IE8 was a tad glitchy for me, but a better improvement over IE7. I reverted back and I will eagerly await the new final release of IE8.

Yeah, it mat be pretty cool when the final version comes out. I definitely see some things that other browsers may do well to begin emulating.

It's kind of funny. IE7 was basically a rip-off of FF with the tabs and such and with the new IE being open-source it is even more true. I think FF may have to return the favor by stealing some of the features of the new IE.

I agree with Coffee too. Security is not so much an issue so as long as you are not someone who considers their PC a freaking "porn machine." One cool thing that AVG 8.0 has is the "Safe Search" add-on for FF that tells you if a site has known spyware or other malicious content before you even click on it. IE8 even though in beta was still able to enable it just like FF.

I found a bad site the other day as a matter of fact while Googling "icon maker" for my daughter. AVG stopped me and gave me a warning before I could even open the page. Sweeeeet.

I prefer internet browsers that don't take a minute to open, and that dont lag to hell and back when you try and stop a page from loading, especially the home page.

When i get the windows 7 beta installed i'll try out IE8, but right now i'm rockin' Chrome and FF

I see your point. I could have also said that I am not going to give Windows a chance until it is as safe as Ubuntu. (Less users, Less attackers). Sensible browsing is ideal, but is not always realistic, especially when exploring new internet boundaries and when others use your PC.

It is SICK! The more I play with it the more I like it. The I predict the accelerators will replace copy and paste eventually. You just highlight text and a drop-down box asks you what you want to do with it like search Google (or any of a number of search engines), translate to a different language, add to a blog, map it if is an address, or what ever you customize the drop down to be.

It looks like this:

There is also a lot of other strange things I don't fully understand yet like the "slices". They seem to be some sort of advanced RSS feed readers that can be manipulated in all different ways, or another way for you to build a RSS customized homepage like My Yahoo! and iGoogle. I'll have to find out.

BTW. I'm not trying to piss on anyone's parade, but it seems to be exactly as fast as FF. Both browsers take exactly the same time to open the YouTube homepage at least with a few tabs open.
