I have a problem with getting a Simple Tech 320 GB External Hard Drive to show up and install it via Plug and Play drivers on windows 7.
Here is the model number. 96300-40001-001
What happens is, that it recognizes something is attached, but when trying to get it so I can read the data, it comes up in the Device Manager as:
Unrecognized Device
Mass Storage Controller
However, neither find a driver within Windows 7 Windows Update, or manually searching for the driver.
I did try sticking it in the freezer, that did not seem to help anything. The drive itself isn't clicking, or making any noises that would seem to me as it was failing.
Now all I need is a Windows 7 compatible disk manager.
I got it working, however, I do need a Disk Manager that is a bit more sophisticated then the Disk Management tool in Windows 7. Problem is, I havn't found one yet. Anyone have any ideas or suggestions they could give me for this?
Acronis and Easeus do not work.
Rip out the HDD and install it in your own enclosure...
What kind of POS enclosure requires a "more sophisticated" disk manager?!?! LOL. Seriously!
Anyways, more sophisticated disk manager for Windows? That's probably not a good idea - that means that if you did find one, the external drive then becomes dependent on the 3rd party disk manager for use. You can try any of the partition tools ones listed with Hiren's BootCD and see if you have any luck.
Moving forward though, I would personally *really* rip out the HDD and use a third-party enclosure. Any USB device that doesn't conform to plug-n-play in Win7 is just asking for trouble in the long-term...
BTW, is your device manager *still* showing "Mass Storage Controller"? It *could* be that the enclosure uses a proprietary controller integrated into the enclosure, which would require a driver disk from Simpletech. That would be a first for me...
I just remembered that I had a similar problem with a friend's hdd. I think it was a Simpletech too. The enclosure had somehow gone bad / got fried. The HDD was still somewhat readable, but the MBR or NTFS TOC was definitely corrupt somewhere. Took me 72 hours to recover the 250GB worth of data...
Anyways, just pennies for thought. What with Thanksgiving / Xmas sales on, save yourself the hassle and build yourself a new external
Why I need the third party disk manager is because it will be being used fluently with Windows and a Nintendo Wii. Problem is that it needs to be used with a file system that is not an open ideal. It is only used on the Nintendo Wii.
I just need something that will allow me to set up the drive I need to, and Disk Manager does not let me do that.

Ahhhhh..... You left out the "Wii" part in your original post
Everything's coming together now, lol. Let me think / look around, maybe get back to you in a bit...
I did find something really interesting. It seems that if I plug the Hard Drive into one specific port it works. If I plug it into any of the others, it does not.
I did restart. I did try "uninstalling", etc. It just seems really odd. I don't quite understand why. But, I think I may have also found a Hard Drive Manager.
