HD 4870 1bg or GTX260 (core 216)?

...which one should I go for?

Consider both as reference cards (stock clocks) - which one's the better performer?

Overclocking wise, which has more headroom?

Am hoping to make a decision tonight / tomorrow morning.

at higher resolutions with AA the HD4870 ius way better my GTX260 can barely handle crysis with 4x AA on 24" monitor. And the 4870 definitly has more overclocking head room. my GTX260 is terrible at overclocking.
GTX260 performs slightly better than HD4870 1GB .. but still they're pretty equal so get the cheapset one.
The card's are about the same benchmark wise, one does better in some and the other does better in others. Here is some benchmarks: http://www.bjorn3d.com/read.php?cID=1414&pageID=5836

I don't know about overclocking for the 4870 but I know the GTX 260 overclocks well, and now that EVGA released that voltage tuner I'm sure it can overclock a lot better then a 4870.

They are very close in performance. I just chose the 4870 here:

The cooler is pretty poor and there is no fan control, but it is the cheapest 1gb I could find.

This is a good deal too:

Keep in mind, the nvidia cards fold better

Well if they are similar in price, I'd say go for the GTX260 simply because you will likely get a longer warranty (if you go with EVGA BFG XFX it will be lifetime). Also factor in that NVIDIA cards can fold better and have physx (may not be so important for you, having the option is always good).

MIR's are your friend

edit: fwiw, I would have gotten that GTX260 if I didn't want to go ATI this round and/or want the ability to go xfire in the future. (even though I doubt I will)

They are pretty close. Get the cheaper price one. 4870 is a 150w GPU vs. GTX260 is a 182w GPU.
Thanks - appreciate the input guys!

I'm leaning towards the 260 at the moment (thanks for the link X1L3D)

My last ATI card was the 9800SE AIW (modded to 9800 pro) and have since had nVidia cards (6600GT, 7600GT, 9600GTOC and 8800GT).

I thought my next card was *definitely going to be an ATI* when the 4870 prices drop - mainly because of image quality. However, the NV cards have CUDA and Physx - what features do the ATI cards have over NV?
If you want to fold go for the 260. If not go for the 4870. I'd suggest an evga 260 btw they have great support.
EDIT: Those benchys seem pretty bias btw :/
wich ever is cheapest. The 260 oerfirms maybe about 2 fps in some games. And also consider you mobo (crossfire, Sli)
