It is actually cheaper to grab 3 6950s then a single 6990; up here anyways. It may only be 50 bucks more if you include the motherboard that supports 3 cards, but frankly, I'm wowed by this. Include the unlocking capabilities of this card, you frankly get 3 6970s for the price of 2.

Personally, I'd rather have a single dual-GPU solution than Tri-Fire, but that's just me

(It runs too hot and loud for my taste as it is though... would require aftermarket cooling)

Also, scaling from 2 to 3 cards usually offers poor returns compared to moving from 1 to 2 cards.

No point in 3 cards really because it much hard to cool them and no really worth the extra performance, PSU retirements, MB requirements, Game support, Drivers, The actually need for the extra power, the need for extreme resolutions like 1600p or 3 x Monitor setup. In the end 2 is the sweet spot unless you bench all day.

flashing the bios on a 6950 does not make it a 6970.

3 GPUs are all right. Just force the fan down. 99% of the time you won't be running them at 100 percent anyways. A nice spaciable mobo. Let alone, you will get a lot better FPS then a single 6990. ATI/AMD scales pretty well. Might be looking at 2.4x the performance of a single 6970.

You can. There has been some review sites that have benched an unlocked 6950 at the same speeds of a 6970. Gave the same results as the 6970.

Read this article from Rage3d. It unlocks the extra shaders but not texture units and the powertune value doesn't change. The article will answer covers a couple of other things and will answer all of your questions.
