Hi,
I am looking at getting the HDT-S1283 along with retention bracket which people have said makes mounting better.

My only concern is weight. Given the case stands upright, is having such a tall cpu sitting out there hanging, will that cause overdue stress on the board or should I lay the case flat?

It is fine, any cooler EXCEPT that silly pure copper true will work without ripping your cpu socket out. Just remember to always be very careful if you need to move the case around, as a drop or violent bump could use the weight of the cooler against you and actually damage the board.

Not heavy at all. It's just large. All the aluminum is paper thin so it doesn't add up much. But yeah the retention bracket is good for better contact and more stability, it may be light but pushpins struggle to hold stock Intel coolers.
