Hdtv & 1080p

Hey guys, I just got me a Sony KDL52W4100 & the TV is incredible.
I currently only have it connected using a VGA cable from my PC to my TV, cuz thats the cable I had on my old HDTV.
I'm realizing I only get 1080I PC output to the TV, & I think you can only get 1080P using a DVI or HDMI connection right?

Another question is, Im thinkin about getting a internal PC BD Player.
Would the PC BD player look as crispy as a stand alone or PS3 BD Player?

Last question is, my tv is a 120hz model, would the 120hz still work if Im outputting a move from the PC to the TV?

Thanks in advance!!

VGA is analogue. You cannot run digital through it. Component, HDMI, and DVI will work for High Definition. As for the BluRay, really all depends on the player. I personally use my PS3.

edit: As far as the 120hz goes, I dont know why it would matter what source the digital signal is coming from. You should still get that refresh rate. But I am not 100% positive on that.
Thanks Emp. Hopefully more people can comment on this.
Yes you will need DVI to get above 1080i. Currently your are running at 1920x1080 @ 30Hz, 1080P is 1920x1080 @ 60Hz. Now with a PC you can make the PC push 120Hz but movies won't actually play different from 60Hz to 120Hz, but your TV will "smooth out" the movies automatically being 120Hz.

Oh and I also use my PS3 for Blu-ray.
Thnx LX, I guess time to order me a DVI to HDMI cable.

As far as VGA, that is not true, the newer conenctors are what they call "HD15" It can run 1080p jsut depends on the TV. Most TV's that have VGA input will only run a res that is close to 720p.

AS for the internal BD player, they play great.. as long as you have decent processing power/gfx card.
I hate to be a consumer whore but most, if not all vendors of 48xx series cards can output 1080p and 7.1 surround sound through the included DVI-HDMI dongle if you are thinking of a GPU update.

PS: don't buy a $100 or even a $40 "budget" HDMI cable at an electronics store.....the cable, regardless of manufacturer can handle up to 1440p resolutions and they can be found for $6 shipped on ebay.
What if I run my cable from HTPC (DVI-D) to my LCD TV (VGA 15pin D-sub).

Will I get 1080p? PC screen resolution is 1920x1080.

It depends on your TV's max resolution from the VGA port. I would recommend looking up the specs of youe TV online, and see what the max resolution you can get from the VGA port. Most only run 720p

Sup guys, well after messing around with my Nvidia control panel I have it working. I guess my TV does support 1080P through VGA.
Its a Sony KDL52W4100.
Although everything looks great I always seem to have this problem when watching movies, I see a horizontal line across the screen & it comes up every now & then & you can see it move vertically throughout the movie.
Like you will see it at the top of the screen, then as the movie progresses you see it in the middle portion of the screen then towards the bottom & repeats. Its not a big deal but its annoying.

Anyone ever have this happen? It also happened on my old TV to.
Im guessin its just a setting or something.
Im using Power DVD, maybe its the software?
Regular movies on WMC or WMP play fine.

Thanks in advance!
Maybe try using different drivers and or re installing codecs.
Sup guys, I recieved my Dvi-Hdmi cable & the picture looks crisp.
The only thing is Im still having that problem when playing movies using Power DVD & outputting it to my tv @ 1080P.

Its a horizontal line that goes across the screen, & I dont know how to get rid of it. Its so annoying. It only happens when Im watching movies.
Anyone have any ideas? I installed the latest drivers already.

I am having the same issue with my HTPC, Athlon X2 4600+ (@ stock) 4 gigs of ram and a ATI Radeon X1600. I see it most prodominantly while using Linux during video playback. I have Windows 7 installed on another drive to test it's Media Center software (it looks great when it's working) but I don't notice the lines nearly as much while on Windows.

My guess is that it's either hardware lacking umph or drivers.

Have you tried running 720p and see if the line is still there? If it is, sounds like a software issue

*Update* wow, I finally figured it out!

I dont know why, but it seems like, I had to change the settings in clone mode.
I always had it as Asus + Sony TV under the clone settings, all I did was switch it to Sony TV + Asus & it worked.
Now when I play movies the horizontal line is gone!

Kneeki I would definitly try that out & see if it works, get back to us & let me know. GL!

Thanks again everyone.

I'm not running in clone mode =(

I'm using my TV as a monitor currently, so there is not any cloning to be done. Currently running at 1280x720, the lines aren't horrible. But it's still awfully annoying. I was able to improve on them through: Before I was running from a DVI -> VGA to the television & a male to male audio cable. Now, I'm running DVI -> HDMI cable with a male to red/white jack audio cable. That seems to have helped a bit (and the picture looks a bit better).
Hey Kneeki, have you tried forcing Vsync?
Its not good for gaming, cuz it forces the FPS to be stuck at 60.
It only helps to reduce flickering, but it didnt work for me.
Maybe you can try that & see if it works.
I think I've tried it in the past. I'll try it again after using that different cable setup, maybe I'll have better luck.
