heat and board positioning

Does anyone know if there's a noticeable difference in how a board is positioned, in regards to heat dissipation?

I mean, for instance, you can mount a board vertically on the side of a case. This is standard lately. I remember also systems where the board was horizontal. I'm getting ready to build a desk mod and the thing I'm most worried about is the heat. I don't know if it even matters, though.

I'm imagining that since heat rises the most efficient way is horizontal(so that heat doesn't pass through the board but rather rises off of it), but maybe I'm missing something?

Thanks!

all things being equal, the differences between heat dissipation of horizontla vs. vertical mobo mounting should be negligible, but horizontal might be slightly more efficient (if you had to choose), but not enough to drive design decisions imho
