Okay, I was dusting my PC yesterday and decided to remove the cooler (never been removed) to better clean it. I have no idea what I did while removing it, but when it came around to putting it back one of the pins wouldn't push in properly (LGA 775). Nevertheless, the computer booted, only to shut down after lagging on POST.
Overheat.
I removed the heatsink again to see the that the thermal paste had hardened, and I assumed that was the problem and went out to buy an Arctic Silver Ceramique 2 in the morning.
Followed the instructions to apply the paste on AS's website (1mm thick horizontal line along where the cores were supposed to be, for Pentium D), and computer boots fine.
However, idle temps at bios are around 72 C and I'm getting severe lag while playing videos and especially when gaming. Hasn't shut down since I glued back the cooler though. Yes, I did clean with ethanol (didn't have isopropyl) and an old lens cloth when it dried.
So, is it the one pin that's not fully pushed down, or do I need to apply more thermal paste? Any help would be appreciated.
thanks,
Cake
