hey guys, wats up this is my first time posting

last night i got home, and installed some 256 megs of pc3200 memory on top of my 512 2100 chip and another 256 pc3200 chip.

i rebooted my computer and checked my computer properties to see if the wat it said for memory. the memory read fine, but then i noticed my cpu clock speed was at 1.25 ghz, and ALL of a sudden i realized how slow the pc was running.

i thought ok maybe my father reset the cmos jumper or something since once and a while the computer wont boot after killing the power for a few minutes. (weird)

so i get into the bios and change back my settings to 167/12.5

i reset my computer and the board clock speed shows as 2.08ghz or suttin like that which is what I usually had the pc running at.

i rebooted but windows showed it as 1.20 or 1.25 or something like that.

i said ***, and jumped online on a near by pc for some answers and to make sure i was settin my stuff correct.

i went back into bios and played around with it some more, and was able to get the pc to boot up as 2.25 at one point. i thought sweet, i got this thing to post faster than i ever have before, nice. so i went into windows to test stability ect and when i got there it ****in STILL registered as 1.25.

i thought ***?! and reset my cmos, this time keepin the jumper off for a while.

on return to bios i configed to factor 166/12.5 for the 1.92 clock speed my chip is supposed to be.

reset the computer, and it wont register, it shows as 1200 EVEN IN THE POST TEST!!

now im pissed, *** did i do, so i remove all my pc3200 memory leaving just the 512 2100 chip in there, reset the cmos and try again.

try as i might (for 2 ****in hours) I CANNOT get the the processor to the correct clock speed even at the factory settings!!!!

i dont get it *** could i have done? i dont believe it was me since the computer showed 1.25ghz from the start when i first got home.

is it possible that puttin in the new chip of 3200 ****ed something up?

help guys

im runnin an:

amd athlon xp2600+ barton core
soyo kt-400 dragon ultra mobo
512 2100, and 2 256 pc3200 memory

i took out the pc2100 chip, and replaced it with the two pc3200 chips, i set the dram to 200, multiplier to 12.5, and fsb setting to 121 (i forgot to see wat that set it to) it runs at 1.53ghz, and thats as fast as i can get it without changin the voltage.

but still, i CANNOT get it to be the correct ghz at 166/12.5 which should be 1.92, instead it registers at 1200mhz. ***!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

it DID not do that last night when i first reset, it would accept the changes, display the correct mhz during the POST, but wouldnt register in windows.

now it wont register on post either.

someone help please

Can you fill out your rig info in the user control panel? that will help us help you.

Also, if you don't have cpuz please download it and post some screenshots of the main tab and the memory tab. That will give you information as to what your computer is actually running.

this is at the stock bios settin, no changes made, to get the correct clock speed i believe it is 166/12, but this registers as 1200 mhz for some reason

I recall a similar thing happened to an old P4 rig I had from a bad BIOS flash. Flashing the BIOS again sorted it out though and as already mentioned, may be worth a try in your case.

i got it to work, this is with the 512 pc3200 memory. only problem is i cant get it any higher than this, do i need to increase voltage? i get a beep, pause beeeep beep beep, when i try to post. (that beep sequence is the same i sometimes get when i power down the pc and turn it back on, to get it to boot i have to pull the cmos jumper on and off real quick, not long enough to reset the cmos. what is this beep?

1 short, one long 2 shorts in a row

beep - beeeep beep beep

cool, i got it the clock speed goin and im sure i can get it to go with the pc2100 memory now that i figured out what im doing a little bit more, but i still dont understand why i am not able to JUST set the dram setting to 166, and have it work like it did before.

maybe ill try a reflash?

I think it's best that you don't mix RAM that have different timings and frequencies and just leave your rig how it is now that you've got it working again.

I had a XP 2600 + that wouldn't go over 1533 mhz (XP 1800+ Speeds) until I upgraded to PC3200 RAM, then I got it to something like 2119?

That was awhile ago

yeah remember 1:1 ratio is the best, so the higher the better, but the closer they are together the beter

yeah, sometimes having different types/speeds of ram can cause this. i would suggest returning the ram you got an maybe look in to buying some dual chanel ram. also, i have to agree with the guys above me. a bios flsh may be a good idea. -trey
