Hi all, I am building a cheap/used gaming pc for a kid.

I've resolved all components but the graphics card. Where I live I can get (for aprox same money withing my budget) a used amd 7870 or used nvidia gtx 660 ti.

All of the benchies I've seen on the internet are really old (with old drivers), and I have a suspicion that the matter of things is not the same today. (and some site seem to prefer higher results for a certain manufacturer)

Anyone have any idea which I should choose?

And is it true that you can modify all gtx 660's into gtx 760?

At the time the HD7870 was competing with the regular non Ti GTX 660 . The GTX 660 Ti was compared to the basic 800 Mhz core HD7950 back at the time. However the HD7950 aged very well, and had a revival as R9 280. Tahiti series (7870XT/7930, 7950, 7970, 7970 Ghz Ed, R9 280 and R9 280X) have aged like old wine. They have received countless optimizations, can sustain good overclocks on the core even with undervolt and ones with good quality PCB and cooling are still running fine. While the performance was good at the time, the Pitcairn cards (HD7850/7870) were however very problematic cards. Some problems were solved with Tonga (R9 285). HD7950s with good PCB are very good cards, that aged and OC well and probably they will cost about the same (they costed the same or slighly less than GTX 660 Ti at the time).

I have never read about those changes unlike with another cards, but I didn't flash any BIOS on that nVidia generation. I think the GTX 760 had more in common with the GTX 670 than with the GTX 660 Ti, but all were GK104s at the GPU core. However the GTX 760 had 1152 CUDA cores (1340 the 660 Ti), 32 ROPS (24 the 660 Ti), 96 texture units (112 the 660Ti) and a 256-bit bus (192 the 660 Ti). I am not sure about the safety of that modification.

Thank you very much. I thought it was the opposite, that the 7870 was ahead today.

There is even one youtube video in in between them in modern games (although I do not trust youtube videos, and the comments below... :)
