Give us your budget. What OpTioN is referring to in his...err... six.. mmm letters is the Core 2 Duo series (E6300 for $180, and a few more for more money). These are right now the best performing CPUs, and overclock like mad. Even the E6300 overclocked (easily over 3.0GHz) beats most anything AMD has to offer and the D9xx series of Intel.

Give us a budget and we can work out a recommended rig for you.

I believe that those two CPUs will perform within a close range from each others. Really hard to tell which one is the better performance.

I am assuming you are looking at the AM2 version of the X2 4200+

On another note:
Your location states United states???

Give us a website from your country, and I don't care if I can't read it

And a total budget in the curreny and are you building a complete new rig?

Between those two cpu's I would go with the AMD. It will perform better gaming and in general computer applications. Like others have stated you should consider a Intel Core 2 Duo, like this E6300, instead of those two options. It will smoke the Pentium D 945 for only $10 USD more.

Remember theres things to be taken into consideration.

1. Current hardware owned.
2. Budget
3. Sometimes preference.
4. Computers main use.

Just because Conroe is a good CPU DOESNT mean that he/she should get one at all.

Now For instance if someone has an AMD based system with DDR1 and has a tight budget it makes more sence to upgrade to an AMD cpu native to DDR1 as it saves money. Also someone may be looking for a CPU that will just serve for day to day use ....Conroe would be pointless for such a thing as it wouldnt be used to its full potential.

Also something i really would like to point out is that Amd is just as good at gaming as a any Conroe....Yes theroetically in benchmarks Conroe will do better...However this isnt going to be all that noticeable and wont make that much difference. The AMD will STILL game and work for the consumer. Infact its the GPU that has the largest affect on gaming.

Believe me when I say I am not a Intel Fanboy, but they are the best right now. I considered these things when I recommended the Core 2 Duo.
1)Currently has a socket 478 rig and it will be a new build requiring new board, memory and processor for either a socket 775 with the Pentium D 945 or AM2 with the 4200+.
2)If he decided to go with the Core 2 Duo it would cost him less then the AM2 setup with the 4200+ and only a few dollars more then the 775 setup with the D-945.
3)Looking for the best between Intel and AMD, so his preference is performance not brand name.
4)He does not multitask and mainly uses his computer for games, music, movies and such. The other processors he looked at are Dual-Core so I recommended another dual core that will perform better in all of those areas. In particular if he encodes or converts movies or music it will really shine.

Attached is an image from Anandtech showing how the E6300 performs compared to other processors including a Pentium D 940. A person with no preference towards AMD or Intel and facing comparable build costs in any scenerio would be foolish not to go with a Core 2 Duo system right now.

Here is a review of the Core 2 Duo posted on Anandtech which has this benchmark and other information.

I have to agree with you, people are getting out of hand with recommending conroe everytime some one is trying to upgrade there rig, sure conroe is fast, but I have two and I game and don't see any differance in them other than benching and folding.

if you get a am2 with the right ram and everyhting else youll be very happy with the product, i would choose that over the pent d myself becasue it will allow to upgrade to am3 cpu (not the ddr3) in the future if you want and that may be a big performance increase to extend the life of your rig that your getting , and like you said if thats what you can afford due to prices over there then thats it, also remember if you do any overclocking that the 3800 may save you some money and may oc past the 4200 speeds (imo)
