Help! Computer wont turn on!!!!

931 Views 36 Replies 17 Participants Last post by  Lord Xeb
I took my PC apart to go and reseat my heat sink (because my temps were getting to 70C for some reason which I found out there was an air pocket that I had gotten under it) and after putting it back together and pressing the switch, nothing... NOTHING! D:

I took the mobo out of the computer and put it on the floor (and put the cords back on it) and tried to start it. Nothing. I havenet tried to take the CPU out, but I am out of thermal compound so that will have to wait.

Can anyone tell me what may be going on?

u sure you plugged the 4-pin connecter in near the processor?
Yes.
Check that the on/off plug is plugged in. No fans spinning nothing?
Do you get a light on the motherboard?

Seems like there's no power. Since anything dead, you would still be able to get fans and stuff. You aren't getting them are you?
alread tested it, it turns on, but as soon as I plug it into my mobo, nothing. Also it was in my lap but I took it out on carpet so I think I fried it D:

Check to make sure that all the front panel connections to the motherboard are hooked up properly. I saw someone connect the power switch to the reset switch connection on the motherboard by accident. What you can try is plugging everything into the board except for the power switch, reset switch, hdd led, etc, and just touching the two pins on the board that would normally be for the power switch with the tip of a screw driver to jump them. Usually these are color coded red on most boards I think.

I think so too. Since you should at least get some movement through the motherboard, but nothing, so something is wrong with it. always risky to put on carpet, though, I do it all the time.

If you get no light, and you are sure it's your PSU and tried the memory thing, then it should be our motherboard's fault.

no I am not getting any kind of power to the board
I will try a spare PSU down in the basement, but I also forgot to unplug the PSU in haste plugging in the 24 pin and things turn on there was a spark. Now I am sure things are dead....
Were you wearing a stating band thing? because it could bet hat you fried it. Either that or the power supply isn't giving the power to the board, when you plugged it in and let it sit there turned off with power going to it was there a light on the motherboard or not?

Edit: if there's a spark good change the thing that sparks is dead.
OOoooowwwwwwwww!!!!!
Don't put it on the carpet. Lots of static potential. Static=dead components.
Always put it on something like a desk or cardboard or something. As for your issue make sure all wires are put together correctly. I switched the HDD light and the power switch and couldn't figure out why it wouldn't power on. Take everything apart(wires) and re do it. Maybe you mixed things up.
With a spark, that must be magical..

I think he's done all those normal procedures already.
Potentially a goner.
There's not much left to try.
Even if there's not enough power for a PSU, it should turn on and then turn back off.
No things are in right. I am just going to RMA things and get a new mobo. I got a spare PSU in the basement (still the box, its a 500W). I will just do that and I should have things working maybe. I think I will just get a new board and try things.

I think i got a dead board....
take your motherboard out of the case and try starting it up that way maybe something is shorted out in the case.
Try the different PSU before you rma anything, just to make sure.
I did take the mobo out the case and nothing still. I will use the other PSU in the basement tomorrow to test things...

Also, i did the paperclip thing and the PSU turns on

If you saw a spark then its most likely done, whenever working on a pc never place components on carpet, always make sure its fully unplugged and make sure to ground yourself before touching things inside the case!

Never mind.... I didn't give my PSU long enough to go and charge itself up >.> Sorry everyone.
