Sorry if this is the wrong section, didnt know where to put it

I was reading alot about custom routers, and I was wondering if I could get some help to build one? I shop from Toronto, Canada, so newegg.ca would be a good site for parts...

Thanks.

Build one? You are better off getting a DD-WRT (or Tomato or Open WRT) supported router.

Or do you want an x86 based router? Theres Soekris

Logic Supply has mini itx boards and stuff if you really want to diy.
I'm actually curious about this as well.

I have a couple of spare PC's.

What other components would I need to set this up?
Well a PC with two nic cards. Go here for more info.
Here's the hardware requirements. http://wiki.untangle.com/index.php/H...e_Requirements
And my torrent speeds increased with untangle. And it's free so that's another plus.

And you can also click the Untangle Club link below for more info also.

Untangles hardware requirements are way too high for a simple home router imo and in my experience was very sluggish.

There is a slimmer version called m0n0wall
FragaGeedon you need to change your avatar due to reading your post several times trying to finish the whole thing lol.

Piratesrule what would you recommend as far as something to do better.
I'm a fan of m0n0wall (what savagebunny recommended).

Others to be considered are smoothwall, ipcop, and pfsense.

I'm currently on running tomato on my Buffalo wireless router.
Im thinking about this also, I just need a small case for like p-ATX or something, and I will prob run Untangle. And How would I know the intel atom is duel core, would it be like the model "270" or something?

The Atom 330 is dual core.

o snap, I will look at it then.
Why would you want a custom built router?? I mean using custom firmware for a linksys router is one thing...

Performance... try torrenting 10MB/s download, 1MB/s upload, and playing a FPS simultaneously.

Added functionality... customizable firewall, packet inspection, logging, reporting, intrusion defense, site blocking, file blocking, ect.

m0n0wall is totally different to untangle
also m0n0wall is self defeating. your better off with pfSense, like m0n0wall except you can actually install it to the hard drive, and you can actually bind interfaces.
i would suggest pfsense, slap together an old p2/p3 machine be it pentium or celery and 256mb ram, and your golden. i am actually working on turning a 1ghz via thin client with pci riser card into a pfsense router/firewall.

plus with pfsense you can comfortably run the os from a flash drive, and dont have to worry about untangle asking you to pay for more features.

ive tried about 10-12 different router OS's in the past 2 weeks, endian , ebox, vyatta, redbox, m0n0wall, smoothwall, gibraltar, as well as untangle and a few others. pfsense to me is by far the easiest to setup and get running in literally minutes. be it a transparent firewall or an actual firewall/dhcp server.

but really if you have the time and blank CD's try a few out, see what you like.

give that a brief glance its pretty good list of firewall/router distros

Why dont you try one of those "killer" NIC cards, it works seperate from software windows network BS and is supposed to be able to set bandwidth for different things you are running.

That's completely different.... that only helps your particular machine.

It does not improve your entire network plus the KillerNIC would still be bottlenecked by the router.

Can you disable logging in pfSense? Can you force it to write on a RAMDrive and periodically dump to the flash drive? Routers tend to do a lot of write to the drive and will wear out flash drives relatively quickly.

Just to note... Untangle's pay features do not really apply to home users.

In theory, if you ran the killer NIC on a standalone system used as a firewall (Killer also has a hardware firewall) and ran thru that.. then it could work how you want it to.

But it wouldn't be a router... unless they released a FNapp that allows it to do so.
