hi guys im new to the thread and i need to make a rig to make 3d stuff

i do graphx design but i wanna be able to render stuff at home and i been saving up money for a hot minute

i just joined a couple days ago after bein a lurker and i love the site u guys.

im prolly going c2d like alot of pple right now cuz its just too good not to see or pass up etc..

my friend has been pushing me to make a new rig and im not sure where to start, but it appears that you guys know what you're doin.

all i know for certain is that i'd dig a raid 0 of 2 drives and liek a big fatty of a saving drive as a third. oO

and at least a e6600 chip.

id be willing to make my watercool rig as well so its pretty much somethin to do for the next month or so.

i heard about a dfi board coming out R600 and all the fuss about it could be a shlamming board. id be willing to overclock because...well if i wasnt why'd i be here ^_^

i mean i can shell out a decent wad of cash ( like 2k 2.5k)

i can go over but i'd rly not like to ( wallet becomes sad ) or ( gandhi wallet)
whichever u pref.

i know everyones been sayin it but i'll state the obvious because i hit a brick wall in terms of what to get for a new tower.

ANY SUGGESTIONS?!

wow 2k will get you a decent rig! I just built a friend one like mine(except for mouse, keyboard, and 2nd 7900) for alittle under 1500 including monitor and keyboard and speakers.

I've heard alot about dx10 cards so everyone might suggest you hold on a hot minute for that

first of all welcome to the forum, second of all the rig:

well you want it for rendering and design, so a dual core obviously the way to go. so:

A core 2 duo (dunno which model depends how much you spend on the rest)
2gigs of DDR 2 ram or above
Graphics card depends on your games.
Alot of Hard drive space for 3D editing! 200GB hard drives are under 100 these days so not to bad.

hope this helped at all

thanks for responding so quickly you guys

well i figured maybe a couple of fast drives

like a 74 gb raptor or i see alot of pple have 150 gig vers on raid 0 as well

anythin with 10000 rpms... and you know what... gimme 2 lol
whoever im gonna try to hit on at the bar this weekend is gonna have to eat curly fries. oO

but yeah and id roll that into a niesch raid 0 config

and then a third drive of at least 300 gigs ( seems to be a sweet spot for drive cost /money )

ok

im stuck on a c2d e6600 or 6700
the mobo will prolly be an asus flavor board... as SDUMPEr and some other heads already tested with nice overclocks.
2 gigs ram
crap i didnt even think of a case yet gaaaaaaaahh

E6600 would be my choice, cuz both are very close aft oc, especially when u re going to water cool it......
for graphic, it really dependes on whether u would game a lot. if yes, my choice would be a Radeon, as many ppl say it has more accurate and nicer colour than GeForce. If not, well, a pro card is the way to go, but that will probably quite expensive.......

you do graphic design or 3d?
btw: welcome

Here are my general tips for building a computer for media arts..
I'm pretty good at this since I've built a few PC's for my render farm, lol.

CPU:If you want the fastest render times in 3d you need a good CPU
You can cut your render time in half with a dual core CPU and the larger the cach and clock the more time it will cut off rendering times.

Graphics card:For view ports for 3d and Graphic design it is important to have a good graphics card. You don't need he best but the better you have the larger the images you can manipulate in photoshop without lag and the faster you can draw polygons in your 3d view ports. If you do work in 3d you wont regret getting a nice card when your working on models over a half a million polygons. btw:To give you a idea of how a 6series card performs in 3d.. I have a few 6800GT's in the other machines and they start to lag at 500,000polys. If you intend on making models with polycounts that large or larger you realy need a 7series card. Even nicer would be the G80 series thats coming out soon.

Ram:Your ram doesn't have to be awsome but again the better the ram the more system will preform in general. I'd get at the minimum 2 x1gigs. If you ever work with after effects and do ram previews its a must..

Hard drives:For rendering in 3d you want nice hard drives at least 7200rpm. Because image secences are being sent to the hard drive as the software renders so it is important its quick. Sata are preffered but ATA works fine too.

Monitor: you want as big with the highest resolution you can aford and the highest contrast ratio and brightness you can get. If your in graphic design you see the point to that. Also get one thats DVI with a DVI video card. It makes a huge diffrence in clarity. I really like my samsung 204B but it will set you back.

thats just a quicky guide.. but hang around here and we will point you in the right direction

thanks you guys for the quick replies

as thish is not exactly the most " happenin thread" LOL

anyway
yeah im shooting for as of now anyway

conroe e6700 ( despite most pple saying dear god dont)
a zalman reservator ( a fanless one or the external one is cool)
some hd silencers and some foam paddy for the case ( Y_Y )
2 sata hard drives in raid 0 at at least 74 gigs ( raptor )
1 or 2donkey drives ( a 300-500 gig store drive)
a nvie 7 series card ( to do the 3d and the zbrush im getting the bang out of)
2 gigs of ram ( not sure what yet but the 6400 variety looks nice, i was gonna go for high fsbs)
a mobo ( i have 3 boards of the asus flavor and im not sure if i should go gigabyte, asus or dfi's new board comin out, so long as i can pull off
a 3d design chipset thingy it rly doesnt matter)

* as i have mentioned that standing radiator has no fans i think and i wanted a quiet case and a "decent overclock" *

any help is appreciated.

definitely get an ATI X1k series card. they support avivo video converter, which sounds like its what you'll want to use. either that or get a FireGL or quadro series card.

Noooooo, E6700 is a waste of money. The E6600 can overclock beyond X6800 speeds and with watercooling you could get it even further. Spend more money on Premium memory and kick ass GPU(s), although holding out for DX10 could be a wise decision also.

Also if you want the most Extreme, you could get yourself a Core 2 Quadro in November...

yeah im shooting for one of those cards..

avivo video converter??

that i am not aware of since i have been out of the loop

i mean the most converting i do is from composite to mpeg 2 to show my reel on dvd etc..

i was just going to get a tv output card from ati as a secondary so i can see my work on an adjacent "non computer" screen.

thanks

well isnt like a quad core going to run a hell of alot?

i mean i read the specs its 130 watts i mean geez i dont wanna contribute to the planet exploding lol...

but anyway yeah i figure thats at least a grand chip and only 3d pple such as ourselves ( generalizing) would have a performance gain of 80% for multi threaded stuff right? sounds like a good upgrade path though

but id have to get a board that can take/accomodate a quad core... am i crazy enough???

Well if I remember right there are 2 Core 2 Quadro chips. One is around $1,000 and the other is like $500-600. A slower quad core would slaughter a dual core if the application you're using is written to utilize it.

And as far as the graphics card, I would recommend either 1 or 2 512MB ATI cards, as they would work well for you. ATI cards have slightly better image quality (with AVIVO) they can run HDR and AA at the same time, and the 512 MB of memory can really boost performance for photo editing.

Or... I know I'm gonna get flamed for this...

You could always get a Mac...

well im scrooed cuz i just saw how the quad core looks and i like it
i havent built a rig so waiting a month isnt so bad.. i can get another chip or

wait for the DFI and Bad axe 2 boards to come out.. i know alot of pple are recommending conroe but its like i wanna see if this is worth it since its so close..

does that make any sense???

Perfectly! 3d rendering will be GREAT on quad...

I have a lowly single core Oh well.. On a couple of years I will build a new rig.. 8 cores? Possibly..

wonder why they use GPU's to render graphics? cause they're better at it - its a specialized cpu only on a different bus and not general use. this is just ATI's attempt to make a gpu's use a bit more "general" yet still specialized.
get a core 2 quadro, an x1950xtx Crossfire enabled and 4gigs of pc2 8500 ram, with like dual 150gig raptors in RAID 0... and some larger slower drives for storage..
that would blow away any competition.

or you could just build a cluster supercomputer. haha not really, you'd need the app to be extremely multi-threaded for that to work well.

i know tyan sells a supercomputer that you can plug 8 opty's into (4 mobo's one case), get dual core optys and you've got 16 cores
i dont care how good core 2 duo is, with 16 optys you cant beat it, if the application uses them all.

that sounds pretty shpanking.

but i dunno that totally screws me cuz now id have to get a 6600 for now while i wait for quadcore and will my waterblock even be able to handle a quadcore?
i wanna at least futureproof this thing for a year i mean christ... from what you were suggesting i see at least blowing 2.5k on that spec list
thanks to everyone at overclock.net who decided to listen to me rant when i didnt make any sense

im sure i have plenty more of those to say in the next couple days LOL
