Help me build a PC $850 limit

Hi guys, I have a friend who has asked me to help him build an entire computer for $850- this includes the operating system, monitor, keyboard/mouse, and productivity software.

He wants Intel, preferably i5 (but will settle for 775), this will not be for gaming, so a low-end discrete or even integrated graphics will be acceptable- he absolutely does want a solid state drive + secondary drive for storage combo. Overclocking is a possibility, but not a must, so an intel board might do well. What he basically wants is a very quick web browsing/every day computer.

This is what I have picked out so far:
NEWEGG CART
software:
windows 7 pro 64 (student deal) $ 30
MS office (student deal) $ 60

I'm already impossibly over budget, and I don't even have the video card not to mention solid state drive picked out yet. What would you guys suggest I do? Is a solid state drive/i5 computer impossible for 850 dollars, including a monitor? Should I just go for 775?

Also, I know very little about solid state drives- this computer isn't going to have tons of programs on it, so a large drive isn't exactly necessary- I'm guessing a 32 GB solid state drive would be fine. Remember, this is supposed to be a fast computer, not a gaming/data storage computer. Which SSD would you guys suggest?

Thanks so much

your wish list is empty.

And for your budget, I would go AMD. I know he wants intel, but for what he is doing I don't see how he would see a huge difference.

if he went core i5 it would beat any AMD build out there

Ok, I will suggest that to him. I know very little about AMD, so what board/processor would you suggest? I think that onboard video would be best. does THIS sound alright?

For the money you're talking about you'll want an AMD rig instead of i5. It'll be faster than s775 and has a good upgrade path.

I would go with this.

GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P

AMD Athlon II X4 620

OCZ Obsidian 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

Ok thanks- I will suggest this to him. but what about an SSD? That's something that he definitely wants

And also, instead of the video card and mobo you suggest, what about THIS MOTHERBOARD with onboard video to save money? this won't be a gaming pc and will have no need for a video card from what he says

a good-sized ssd can cost almost as much as your entire build budget. however, if you can avoid a dedicated gpu, a ssd is very possible.

Oh if he's using onboard then yeah I can add an SSD

Go with this motherboard instead
GIGABYTE GA-MA790GPT-UD3H AM3 AMD 790GX
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128398

Kingston SSDNow V-Series SNV125-S2BD/64GB
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820139006

heck you might even be able to squeeze in a RAID array of two of them

Yeah, but why? I mean, the guy doesnt game, he wont be using heavy apps, he just wants "fast". AMD will do everything he needs and do it a lot cheaper, and do it "fast".

Here is what I plan on buying this weekend for my next system:
http://www.overclock.net/intel-build...-thoughts.html

Take the $150 Win7 family pack out, and the HW cost is right at $850 using a $165 ATI HD 5770 video card.

Ok, we are going AMD now.

Mobo:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813128398
CPU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819103706
case:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-066-_-Product
PSU:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817703011
RAM:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227495
monitor:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16824005123
SDD:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820139006

with this cart, the hardware is looking like around &725 dollars with 1 SDD. That plus the $30 for windows 7 is looking pretty good, then he'll be able to afford a decent keyboard/mouse.

Now, what do you guys honestly think about the SDD? Should I look at a different brand? I don't own an SDD, and I know very little about them- not enough to accurately recommend one to him. This computer is supposed to last a while, so longevity is important.

if he wants fast they just get a E8500 and overclock that thing to shreds

The AMD build you have there looks good. But why put a quad core in if all he's doing is web surfing? That's massive overkill, you can get a dual core 240 for $30 less which he could use for a nice wireless keyboard / mouse or bigger monitor.

As for the mobo, while the 790G and 785G are very similar, the 785 is supposed to have better performance. So if he were going to stream some HD video or the like it should accelerate it better.

You could also go with less ram if you wanted to since he's not doing anything heavy with it.

And I'm not sure what the SSD is going to do either. I'm sure it has the possibility of making web browsing a bit faster but I couldn't imagine it would do anything noticable for how much it costs.

Solid build, but it just seems massively overbuilt for what he's going to use it for. Could save a fair bit of cash and get performance that feels just as good.

Openoffice is like office only better imo. Save your friend $60. www.openoffice.org is totally free!

this computer is supposed to be as future proof as possible. I want it to be considered at least moderately fast even in about 5 or more years. I know it may seem overkill now, but in the future I want it to still be a decent machine. The quad and RAM may seem overkill now, but 4 GB is pretty standard now a days, and I'm sure in the future more RAM will be used and cores will be supported. The SSD will easily be the fastest and most reliable option, not to mention simplest.

So what do you guys think about the SSD suggested above in my build list? Should I look at OCZ or Intel instead?

And to the post above, we've already obtained the copy of office. You can't beat $60 buck for office ultimate
I had a spare copy lying around, and I'm gonna swing him a deal anyways. And honestly, I'm not a huge fan of open office for a customer like this one, although I do recommend it to some people
