Help me Build my Christmas List!

600 Views 10 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  the_xpert
I need to build some kind of Christmas list for the holiday season, and would like some help. Look at my sig rig, and upgrade it! I don't want a full i7, 5970, 57 gigs of ram list, I'm looking for smaller improvements.

One thing I don't like is how much power and heat the 4870x2 puts out. I can heat my whole room with my rig right now, but I don't really want to downgrade. graphics performance.

Also processor suggestions would be great.

I'm looking for best cost/performance upgrades (not just limited to CPU/GPU).

Suggestions?

EDIT: Also, on my list already is a fan controller. this is the one I'm looking at http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-171-_-Product Look good?

Ask for a heatsink for the 4870x2.
The fan controller should be fine + it's free shipping which is always good.

As for a cooler for it, there aren't really many of them out there but one in particular that i've heard about would be the Accelero XTREME 4870X2.

I don't know much about it but you could look it up.

As for your CPU, i wouldn't really change it any further since you'd probably need a new motherboard that is AM3 if you want newer amd's such as the phenom 2 line. The only one better than yours would probably be the x4 9950 which speeds you allready achieved by overclocking, the only reason you'd want to get it is probably more OC capability but i doubt that it can do much better than your current one.

Good luck on the list.

Looks like a good option.

All the Phenom II's are drop in to AM2+ (which is what my mobo supports). I wouldn't be able to get the DDR3, but I'm 99% sure I can upgrade the processor.

What I'm hearing about the card so far is that there isn't really a price conscious upgrade path at the moment. (since two 5850s, 5870s or a 5970 would be ~600$) The cooler sounds like a good idea, but it doesn't help with the power issues or the fact that it's heating my room. It just spreads the heat away from the cores faster. It's a good idea though, and it opens up a weekend project, which is always fun!

EDIT: I was looking to fill out my motherboard with 4 more gigs of DDR2, but it's $100 for a 2x2gb kit! RAM prices have soared! Oh well I guess that can wait.

Oh my bad, i forgot that part, hah haven't looked at the new phenoms due to lack of interest but still, i probably wouldn't upgrade from that CPU anyways and wait for prices to drop a bit, maybe upgrade to DDR3 compatible mobo and DDR3 in the mean time right?

TBH I would definetley consider upgrading the CPU, the Phenom I's were almost a complete failure, with the exception of the 9950 BE, which still wasn't very good. I would suggest at least a 720, which at ~$120 isn't a bad upgrade. If you want to go all out and get a quad though, go for it
no one's stopping you.

I would definitely wait on the video card and RAM, for gaming you won't notice much of a difference in performance from 4-8Gb, and you're right there really isn't a price conscious way of upgrading your video card right now.

Ok. So even a 720 would be an upgrade? I was looking at a 955 or possibly 965 but both of them are 125w chips. There is a 95w 945 (3 GHz). Will I notice a difference in power draw between the two? I'm between that 945 and the 965.

Also, last time I bought a processor, a month later the new ones came out (phenom II). This isn't going to happen again is it? What's on the horizon for AMD processor wise?

Take a look at this review. It includes the 720BE and the 9950, the 720 ends up killing it. If you can afford it expect more from the quads.

Does your motherboard only support 95w chips? If so, I'd definetley go with the 945 (if you can afford it) or the 720BE.

I actually have a 125w chip in there now. I'm just trying for as low power draw as possible. Which with a 4870x2, power draw sucks anyway. I can't wait until something with a lower draw that beats or matches performance comes into a reasonable price range.

So is it worth it to buy a 940/945/955/965 now? Because when I bought my 9850, a month later it got blown away. Nothing new coming over the horizon?
