I'm in a bit of a pickle here, IF I sell my mobo/cpu/ram for $300, I could get:

AMD 4400+
DFI SLI-DR Expert
2GB (2x1GB) G.SKILL DDR500
For about $850-300=$550

OR

I could sell just my cpu/ram for $150 and get:

Pentium D 930 Presler
2GB (2x1GB) Crucial Ballistix DDR2 667
For about $700-150=$550

So which should I do, considering the cost to me (my dad) will be the same $550 bucks, should I get a 4400+ and OC it to about 2.6 which is what most people get to or should I get the Presler which should hit over 4.2GHz......

I'm not saying this just because I'm a fan of AMD, I'm saying this because you will get an overall better CPU if you go with the AMD. It might not be as fast, but I imagine it will be more overclockable and you will be able to squeeze more power out of it. Also, the DFI boards have been shown time and time again to be some of the best OCers on the market.

I did the math and found something that made AMD the obvious choice, considering AMDs 9ops/cycle to Intels 6, it would take a 4GHz Intel to match a 2.4GHz AMD, and since 2.6GHz seems easy enough with my Big Typhoon, I would need a ~4.3GHz Intel to match that, and that seems a bit high even for the Big Typhoon, but either way I don't think my dad's going for it

AMD has the upper hand right now--unless you are willing to put up with high heat, high power usage and high price AMD is the way to go--that said I'm sticking with Intel (some things don't have to make sense--like sticking with ATI back when they sucked)

Well, my dad officially told me to go F*ck myself (lol, actually he just said no but I heard go f*ck yourself) so im not getting any upgrades, MAYBE a 7900 in March if I get good grades but I'll probably pay for that.

Unless you play a lot of RTS games, graphics card is more important anyways. Your cpu should be fine for awhile longer. If you do play RTS games though, you can never have enough horsepower under the hood. There's nothing worse than playing with 2 thousand units on the map and it turns into a slideshow because it's so slow.

Get the AMD system, you won't regret it.

I'm still a little sceptical about Conroe. Intel said the same thing about the original skt423 Pentium 4's. Though at least the few things I've seen about the Conroe's are positive.

I don't have any major troubles with Intel, it used to be that AMD was for gaming and Intel was for multi-tasking, video editing and other similar applications.

AMD has started to overtake Intel now though, even though it's only by seconds. (Gaining 10 seconds during CloneDVD is not enough for me to throw away my whole system and buy all AMD stuff), so if Intel DOESN'T amaze with Conroe, I might consider switching in a few years when I ened a whiole new set up....

That said, I hear the talk from Intel on Conroe.....but I haven't seen any benchmarks yet.

I'll wait to see the
from intel.......
