Protocol in technology?
Well in terms of computer science, google define puts it as "rules determining the format and transmission of data"

It's usually the accepted way of doing things, like adhering to a standard.

Standards or guidelines you have to follow. For example the TCP/IP protocols controls how the data is sent on your computer to the internet and how the ip address is determined

A convention/standard of how things are done. TCP/IP works the same on every computer, hence it is a protocl. Same with things like HTTP, FTP, etc.

Pretty much everything above sums it up.

Think of it more akin to language.
If someone started yelling at you in the 'German' protocol, you'd be like 'does not compute'.
