Help me fix my CoD 4 please!

Hi,
I bought CoD 4 not long ago, and installed it on my main rig. It ran fine, and I'm getting quite good at it
. Anyway, I installed it on my laptop (Dell XPS M1710), and the multiplayer only works when a microphone is plugged into the port (otherwise it says 'iw3mp.exe has stopped working). I've tried uninstalling drivers, updating drivers, re-installing the game, disabling audio devices e.t.c., but it still happens. Is there any way to fix it? I don't really like having a microphone trailing out of my laptop
.
Thanks

Try this.

Go to Start then Control Panel
Double click on the Sound Tool
Click on the Recording tab
Right click and select "View Disabled Devices"
Enable the Stereo Mix

If your using Vista uninstall realtek sound drivers and let windows use its own.

I have to keep a pair of headphones plugged into my mic port all the time, its annoying but it works.

I'm using the default drivers, and it still happens. Thanks for the help though

That's what I'm thinking as well. Do you have the 1.7 patch installed?

I try to get the new patch if you haven't already and see if you can get the newest sound drivers too.

I've got the newest 1.7 patch - it makes no difference. I've tried updating drivers, trying different versions e.t.c. Thanks for the ideas though

Its a COD4 bug. Plug something in and live with it. Sucks but its the only way around it.

I'm using the latest drivers, I've tried loads of different versions and apps though. I'd like to try and find a solution rather than 'live with it', but maybe that's what I'll have to do

Thanks to everyone so far
