Help me pick a video card

Doesn't matter the brand ATI/NVIDIA. I'm looking for something for my dads computer, he's gonna be upgrading from a 8600GT. I was looking at GTX260's they seem pretty good at a decent price. I'm looking to spend below $200 somewhere in the $160 range. What would be an ATI equivalent of the GTX 260's ?

ATi Equiv. is the 4870 1gig version, which is about the same price.

I have to ask though, what is your dad doing that warrants an expensive video card? What resolutions does he use?

my other rig has this card, its decent.
Not sure why you'd buy that, when you can get this for the same price.

Either 4870 or GXT260 216 is good and fits in that price range. 4870 is a 150w GPU and GXT260 216 is a 182w GPU so make sure his psu is able to handle them.

Thanks guys, he's gonna use it primarily for video editing but I'm gonna game on it while I'm saving up for an i7 system. I just saw 9800GT at my local computer shop $89.99 is that a good deal ?

Yes, but again, it depends on the resolution.
What size monitor and what resolution does he use?
If you have a 30" monitor @ 2650x1600, a 9800GT isn't going to do any justice, just the same as having a GTX295 @ 1440x900 is not going to take any advantage of the horsepower behind the 295.

He has a 24" monitor with 23.5" viewable area
gtx 260, FTW!!!! just make sure you get the core 216 version.
ya get the 260 or 4870

assuming he is using 1920x1200 res thats a fairly high res.

Then, no. A 9800GT will not power the highest games at 1920x1200.
You should be looking at a 4870 1gb, GTX260 or GTX280.

Which one is better the 9800GT or the 9800GTX
^9800gt=4830, 9800gtx+/gtx250=4850

9800GTX of coarse is better.

9800GTX+ GTS 250 = Same

I think your best bet here would go for the GTX260 Core16...
Give him the performance he wants, at the price he wants, and hey.. you get a free game in the process.
