Help me with my buyer's remorse (Asus Maximus III Gene)

So, I decided that I wanted the ability to go crossfire in the future, or maybe Fermi with a physx card if I'm feeling frisky.

I also wanted to do a red/black color scheme on this build.

My old board was the Gigabyte P55M-UD2. It was a great board, but had NO VRM cooling, and the second PCI-E slot was not connected to the CPU, only to the chipset, so no capability for x8/x8 CF. The blue/white just really got kinda old as my old AM3 board had that as well.

My original plan was to go with the evga P55 micro, but it has the standard onboard sound. There isn't room with CF'ed 5850's to add in a soundcard on ANY of the matx boards.

Because of that, I ended up deciding to go with the Asus Maximus III Gene because it has the built in SupremeFX X-Fi. I know it's kind of a joke compared to the acutal X-Fi cards, but the ONE thing that made it important to me was that it is the only onboard sound I'm currently aware of that has a true multi-band graphic EQ, instead of some stupid presets thing.

Anyways, I LOVE the way this board looks, I know it was the right choice to satisfy my needs, but I also HATE supporting companies like Asus that have horrid customer service, and a website that they OBVIOUSLY are TOO CHEAPSKATE to pay good hosting on. That doesn't make me feel too good about my purchase.

It also was WAY out of my typical price range (not because of budget, because I am a cheap-ass), including the slightly more expensive than I typically like Patriot Viper II mem.

I need someone to
and tell me everything is going to be Ok. Here's a pic of board and mem (not mine personally) for reference:

That is a good board and Asus is pretty reliable board wise... I don't think you should have any problems that will lead you to use there crappy customer service. You picked out a board that satisfied your needs, any other micro board would have less features and not have the BA red and black colors.

Thanks, +rep

This isn't normal of me, typically once I make a decision, it's made, and I don't look back.

It's just I've stayed away from Asus all these years because of their pitiful website and mediocre customer service, but this time I didn't have a choice.

I'm actually really coming to love this board, but it still doesn't seem to help my confidence on the purchase.

Other Asus owners chiming in would be nice too.

HERE'S your Anti-Cognitive Dissonance Buster

This board OC's like a bear. 210x20 for 4.2GHz OR it supports 21x multi even with Turbo disabled

I was going to get the P55M-UD4, but went with this as I already had a bit of inside info on it.
Mine should be arriving next week

lol

That actually is a good point, the Giga boards don't play nice with 21x multi.

I also was really afraid to pass 3.6Ghz on that Giga board, the VRM's were bare naked, and the VRM cooling on the UD4 is FUGLY.

I'm planning a nice showcase build, I don't want VRM coolers that look like part of a pontoon boat or something.

edit: ewiz had a blackfriday coupon for 10% off any order up to $200, so I managed to get mine for $179, and they had free shipping on the M3G, so I felt a little better there too.

LOL pontoon boat; never thought about 'em that way. Reminded me more of speed racer, or...surfing or something

I was torn between the UD4 and this initially, but everything kept going in favor of the Asus in terms of performance and quality....and I'm a huge Gigabyte fan.

I also was able to sell my xtremegamer, so after the ewiz deal, it was more like $150, which was around the same price as the evga P55 micro.

I'm also a HUGE Gigabyte fan, but this board was just too far superior to the UD4 for me to stay loyal.

Truthfully I'm super excited about the board, but it's just been hard for me to shake that last little bit of buyer's remorse. I guess I feel guilty for abandoning Gigabyte.
ROFL I took that out b/c I thought if you didn't get the same deal it might bring back some remorse

Well here's to our $180 Maximus III Genes

Right on, I feel better now.

Be sure to post some pics once you get it built, I'm going to do the same for sure in the buildlogs section.

This board is WAY too sexy not to show off. I'm sticking mine into a custom powdercoated NSK3480.

Niiice. Mine's going in a P180 Mini, and I think I'll need to paint the case door behind the mobo tray for it (white clashes with the black interior).

I think I'll be going air though (Mega Shadow), don't have any experience w/ custom water and I'm not that trusting of the H50's durability (internal pump).

Gotta admit It does look good / show off the board though (attachment is from someone on OCC UK)

I've had issues with asus, but only their cheap boards. As long as you have a nice clean power source, that thing will be monster!
i'm still holding myself about buying this one because i'm not sure i can cf on that tiny space...anybody try cf yet?...i really want a small set up..
You have no reason to be remorseful. I've been picking out parts for an i5 build for weeks, I want MATX, and I continually come back to this board as my no.1 choice, and that's at the $200 price point, not your lucky $180. It simply has the best feature set of the other p55 mATX boards, not to mention proper board cooling for something meant to be housed in a confined space.

Edit:
Oh and yes, the X-fi is a big factor as well, there simply is no way to have xfire and a sound card on mATX, this helps that problem eminencely.
I have the regular Maximus III Formula and love working on it. These boards are designed for users that want a hands on approach to overclocking, and in that respect, the board definitely delivers with plenty of options and diagnostics for overclocking. Have fun!
