Ok so basically I'm trying to hook my xbox 360 up to
my receiver (Dennon dra-395) then to my tv (samsung 40")
I currently have my xbox hooked up via an hdmi cable directlly to my tv, but I want to run my xbox on my surroud sound, what are my options? The receiver has no hdmi inputs, can I still use an hdmi cable for my video?

You need to use an optical cable to run the surround sound from the Xbox 360 to the receiver.

There's a port on the A/V cable connector that connects into the Xbox 360, the run that into an optical input on the receiver.

Be sure to change the hardware settings in the Sound section to Dolby.

The whole point is to be able to stillget 1080p picture though if I use the AV cables I won't get the same quality picture that I would with the hdmi cable

Hi,
Keep the hdmi plugged in and use that for your video, if you have the analouge video/sound cable then you will need to take a screw driver to it and pry open the grey case revealing the silver innards, now you've removed the case you will be able to fit the connector in under your hdmi cable, then just use the spdif or the white and red
, link for tut., i think this is what your looking for .

All you need to do instead of opening your HDMI cable and potentionally messing it up, is run a set of RCA jacks, you know the Red/White ones from the audio out on your TV and to the audio in on your reciever!! There you go...It may not be true HD sound but I can't tell a difference...I have my PC connected with a SPDIF coaxial straight to the reciever and the sound is about the same...Hope I help and probably saved you $50 if you messed up your adapter for your xbox!!
