Help, noob to Intel. ready to make the switch!

Man i must say. I never thought I would honestly consider this. I have used AMD chips since my old Pentium 2 slot cpu caught on fire and destroyed a 1200 buck system back in the 90s. Ever since then I have been an AMD guy. But the time has finaly come. I feel AMD is falling too far behind in the CPU market and I feel as if I have waisted money. Unstable overclocks with my 955 deneb and an overall lack of faith in a functioning high performance platform to come from AMD, I have decided to give the blue boys a shot. I want to convert my system to an I7 system and break the 4ghz barrier. I wish to use everything in my system. I just want to swap motherboard and CPU.

So here is a few questions.

1. Can I use 3 of the 4 2gb memory sticks I have in triple channel mode on a 1366 based motherboard or does the memory have to be made to run in triple channel.

2. Will my Windows 7 product key get deactivated for switching the motherboard and cpu? (it happened to my Vista Key when i built this system and used my disc I had used for 2 years on my last system)

3. What motherboard should I go with for crossfire support and plenty of USB + oc options? (Asus MB please)

4. What cpu is going to give me 4ghz on air without ripping my wallet apart?

Free rep for the best answers. If you recomend a product please post a link so I can see it.

thank you. I look forward to getting real performance asap!

Its my understanding that you must use a specific triple channel memory kit to run in an i7 motherboard, i think the only way you could reuse your ddr3 dual channel stuff is if you bought an i5 core cpu, but that would require an LGA1156 socket mobo (dual channel ddr3), as apposed to LGA1366 socket (triple channel ddr3) for i7.

I believe the cd keys for OS are locked to motherboard, so you will have to buy a new cd key, dont quote me on that however.

I think the ASUS P6T as mentioned by another member will do you fine, it has tri sli support/quad crossfire support, plenty of USB ports (12 to be exact), as for overclock options, mine is running at 4ghz with Hyper-threading on and theres plenty of volts left if need be.

the best bang for buck cpu is the i7 920, make sure you grab a D0 batch, as they overclock better than earlier C0 revisions, however 99% cpus sold online today are D0 steppers. the 'golden' batch numbers seem to be B batch, however its pot luck as to what batch number you recieve. The i7 920 can be had on newegg for $278.99 here Intel i7 920

Also what cpu cooler are you using at the moment? The recommended coolers for the i7 seem to be TRUE 120 or prolimatech megahalem.

If your dark knight came with the 1366 Brackets then yes your current cooler will work (if not, im sure you can post in the wanted section for a set of 1366 DK brackets)

A i7 920 D0 is world famous for doing 4GHz. The P6T V2 also supports Triple channel, all x58 chipsets do.

Xigma DK as listed in my system profile.

I didnt see that the motherboard was an SLi board, I need corssfire not SLI. I am happy to make the switch to Intel CPU but I refuse to use Nvidia Graphics cards.

any other recomendations?

Yea I made sure i bought the version that has the I7 bracket just incase i felt the AMD chip was a waste. I do feel it was a waste of money now.

The Asus P6T Deluxe V2 supports both SLI and Crossfire-x.

ok good, I was scared for a moment lol. Well now I know what I am getting for christmas. I am sure my dad will enjoy my M4A79T board and my 955 Deneb. Whenever I build me new systems I always pass him down my old stuff.
