Help overclocking my E8500

Hello,

I'm kinda new to overclocking, I have managed to get up to 3.8Ghz and being stable with it. I'm eager to learn more and with your help I hope to be able to get to 4.2Ghz. I have been told that to achive 4.2Ghz I will have to overclock my memory, but in doing so may blow my memory controller over time. So should I keep an eye on my memory controller temperature, what could I use to check the temperature?

My Spec is:

Asus P5Q3 Deluxe Wifi-AP @n
E8500 EO stepping 3.16GHz @ 3.80GHz
Corsair Twin3X2048-1333C9DHX - 9-9-9-24 @ 1334Mhz

I'm using a thermalright true copper heatsink with 2 120mm fans, In a push and pull configuration, well the heatsink is close to the intake fan so it has cold air pushed on it, so its like a push pull configuration. Current Temps are 39c idle on both cores, and about 47 - 50c on load.

The bios settings are as follows

Just up your FSB and when its unstable, increase the CPU Vcore by a bit. Repeat until you're satisfied. memory should increase accordingly. If the RAM becomes unstable, bump it down a bit by using a lower multiplier.

3.8GHz at 1.225V is looking pretty good for you.

Also, what are you using to monitor temps? Those seem REALLY high for a dual core @ low voltage with a copper True..

I'm using real temp and core temp. I dont think my temps are as accurate as they could be, because I think my sensors are stuck at 39c when idle. when I check in speedfan it says my CPU is 33c but both the cores are 39c.

I thought I would aim for 4.00Ghz before I try get to 4.2Ghz, I can't even get to 4Ghz. When changing the FSB to 400 and strapping 266 that gives me 1685Mhz. Upping the Vcore to 1.25V. Saved and rebooted. Failed to post no beeps nothing. So I changed the Vcore to 1.30V still same thing happened. I also tried strapping 333 which gave me 1687Mhz but made no difference

Lower your DRAM frequency if you can, and try again.
Yep, leave the ram multiplier on auto and see how high you can get the processor, then worry about speeding up the ram. You can always run the ram slower than stock.

Temps sound great to me for core temps.

FSB 421 , DRAM Freq 1348Mhz and strapping set to auto. Vcore 1.25V , DRAM 1.80V

2nd attempt FSB 423, DRAM Freq 1354Mhz , strapping auto, same Vcore as before.

Stress testing using LinX with 5 Pass's temps hit 64c on both cores.

When changing the FSB to 425 and Vcore at 1.25V, temps hit 67c while stress testing. Are my temperatures ok?

Bump up the vcore. Try 1.3 at first if stable then try bumping it down a notch untill it becomes unstable. If its not stable at 1.3 bump it up a notch.
It's stable at FSB 425 with Vcore 1.23125V any lower with the Vcore and it freezes and i get the bsod
Ok I've got it stable at 4.20Ghz on Vcore 1.30V thats the lowest it would go any lower and it becomes unstable. Stress testing with LinX, realtemp shows max 67c, but with the side of my case on I get 70 - 78c . Are these temperatures normal? The heat seems to becoming from the power supply, it gets really hot and heats up the case quite abit. I have 4 fans in total, 2 on the heatsink in a push and pull, and one on the front of the case and one on the back.
If you are up to it, cut a circular hole on the bottom and mount the PSU upside down so it takes in air from the bottom of the case. It looks like that case just recirculates the air inside. The case could be the heating issue bc IMHO, it doesn't look like it has good ventilation at all.

Ok, I have now cut a circular hole at the bottom of the case, where the PSU sits and it has helped alot. Also I have put a double 120mm radgrill on the top of the case with 1 120mm fan taking air out of the case. And I can actually feel cold air coming from the front of the case.

Now using realtemp to monitor my temps, I haven't touched any settings. Idle shows 39c both cores, stress testing with Linx I get 71c on core 1 and 70c on core 2. then after testing it goes down to 39c fairly quickly. I'm using the same setting as before to achive 4.20Ghz.

Are these temperatures acurate do you think?
Ok, now that my tempertures are sorted. How can I get stable at 4.2? system hangs when Vcore is 1.31 so where am I going wrong?
I know I said it was stable at 4.2 with vcore 1.30, however it sometimes would fail to post and even freeze when restarting.
