according to hwmonitor, my cpu is at 34C (seems pretty decent)
but my cores 0-3 are in the high 40s
Ive always had this problem. Ive reseated several times (although ive never changed the TIM, still using mx2 from december 07). With the stock cooler though it was way higher. Im at stock speeds with a b3 q6600 idling in windows. Is this really ubnormal? What should I do?
take a look at the pic:

I have the same cpu as you, but much cooler temps.

I would suggest using RealTemp, I have issues using the hardware monitor, its not precise, realtemp is better, much better.
If you are reseating without clearing off and reapplying, that can cause higher temps. Always reapply when you remove the heatsink.
B3's run a little hotter than G0's, also the AC 7 is not that great a cooler for quads.
You're definitely going to want to reapply new thermal paste

Yea, AC7's aren't that great for quads

ok, they are MUCH better with realtemp. So is realtemp right?
These temps seem decent...
Ive never reapplyed thermal paste, my friend has AS cermamique i could use, according to realtemp though my temps seem decent. And the AF7 is enough for stock speeds.

OP, just curious, why does your multi drop to x6 but your vcore doesnt drop below 1.20v? Or is 1.264v vcore the low power state vid for a B3? Do you have SpeedStep enabled with C1E disabled?
The default value for the TJ Max in HW Monitor is 100C. In realtemp it is auto set at 80C, which is correct. You can fix the HwMonitor by changing its hwmonitorw config file in notepad and changing the "CPU_0_TJMAX=100.0" to "CPU_0_TJMAX=80.0"

By the way, remember that the farther the temp is from TJMax the more inaccurate it is. So idle temps don't really mean anything

As long as I manually set the TJmax, I get the same readings with the later release of both CoreTemp and Realtemp. This was true with my Q6700, and now with my Q9650.

edit: The TJmax for the B3 is 80C

Because its a B3, lots of voltage, lots of heat! Speedstep and c1e are ENABLED and im leaving it that way.

So are the realtemp temps accurate? Because those arent bad imho. Its a 10C difference.
WHAT ARE MY REAL TEMPS?! this is frustrating!

Out of curiosity, what is the actual stock vid with the x9 multi? Also you might want to check to make sure the TJmax is set correctly for the temp monitoring programs. I posted above showing the TJmax to be 80C.

You need to change the TJ max to 80, then it will be accurate.

Good Catch. I forgot that B3 was different from G0

MY VID is 1.3V
coretemp gives my temps as 30-33C, the lowest yet. (and fine by me) It allows me to offset TJMAX but i dont know what it is automatically, but they are much lower than the other 2 programs.
EDIT: it says my tj max is 85C. This is wrong? so should i offset by 5 or -5?

I think you need to set it to -5. But just check both, it is one or the other.

As for the vcore, what does CPU-Z show for vcore when the multi is at x9. I have a feeling your voltage isnt dropping to the lower vid state. A 1.3v vid your CPU will probably load into windows at 1.264v vcore.

-5 made it 80C tjmax. Now my temps are 26-29C, this seems very decent.
