Talk to him, see why he's doing it, tell him it's not a solution for anything if he says it helps him cope with problems or whatever, show him what his lungs would lookk like after so many years if he keeps it up. Tell him it's unnecessary!

Smoking turns into a bad vice.<br />
He'll have to want to quit before he truly gets hooked.<br />
Hypnotizim is an option.

Well there is the extreme, if u see him smoking. Take it out of his mouth break it, and break his cig box...<br />
<br />
I've kinda learned that talking to someone about quitting isnt enough.. They always say they are quitting are going to quit. it never happens, rarely.<br />
<br />
I found out breaking there cigs is the best way, but you might loose your friend depending on how addicted he is..

I kept pestering my mom to quit smoking... it took 13 years, but she finally quit. Patience and perseverence pay off (albeit very slowly).<img src="/images/smilies/thumb.gif" border="0" alt="" title="Thumb" class="inlineimg" />

No offense, but I doubt you'd be able to do anything about it.

We have to deal with this sort of thing in nursing school.... "Patient education."<br />
<br />
First of all, it HAS to be your friend's choice, so if there is any way to get your friend to make him to think it was his own idea in the first place, that can help.<br />
<br />
Tell him your concerns about smoking... One of the best things you can do is gather ecuational materials and give them to him and/or discuss them with him. The effects of smoking on the human body are devastating, and will inevitably lead to lung, heart, circulation, and skin problems (all interconnected really). Not to mention it's flat disgusting, smells terrible, and lowers the value of cars/houses.<br />
<br />
Other than that, the only thing you can do is be a postitive, encouraging (but not naggin) person. After teaching him about smoking ask him at a later date how he's doing with it.<br />
<br />
Ultimately though, it has to be his decision. It can take years for someone to finally decide to stop. There are often many stages of denial, excuses, and baby steps that lead up to a final decision. Even then there are often relapses, but with each relapse, it becomes easier to stop again (and you can remind him of this if he stops then starts again).

If he has a kid you can guilt him into quitting by making him realize that smoking will just take his kid's father away from him/her when he gets lung cancer. Then make it a psychological thing. Tell him toprint a whole bunch of small pics of his kid. Tell him to tape one to every pack of cigarettes he buys so that in order to open it he has to rip the pic of his kid.

Being a nicotine addict with 3 children myself, this sounds like it could be the most sensible/effective advice given so far.........provided your friend is in fact a parent.<br><br>
Otherwise as already stated, with any addiction, the addict has to have the desire to quit. The state recently passed a law against public smoking, my habit has since increased. Without the pesonal will, there is no way.

One of my coworkers was trying to quit - so I came up with that method and it really worked. He was able to quit. I would definitely recommend it.
